Justin Chancellor's Pickups

Link Removed will make you Wal pickup clones. The unusual thing about them is that there are 8 coils - an individual humbucker for each string.

Im not sure I would call the pickup I have been prototyping an exact Wal clone. Although it is inspired by the Wal mine is built using a Music Man style cover and with Neodymium magnets. It's basically 8 of my Scarab single string pickups in a more conventional housing.

yep. I'm biting.... any chance of an extra coupla Scarabs to spruce up my MM Bongo 5 string dual humbucker??

(sorry to derail thread for Justin's p/ups... he is my generation's[and the next one after] JPJ as far as I'm concerned!) :bassist:

As far as I know Justin Chancellor uses a Wal Bass and a Demeter Preamp.
The Wal has a Mini switch for "pick emphasis", it is kind of scoop-mids-and-give-more-click thingy.
maybe this will help you.

+1 on the demeter pre. i was using a carvin RL1000 with a BBE sonic maximizer, but now that i have the demeter my BBE sits on the shelf. the Demeter has crazy mids

Sorry its been a while, I got the reply from him promptly but forgot about the thread.

Anyways, heres what I got (I forgo the name out of respect of his privacy since I don't know if he would mind or not..)

"Thanks for your interest in my work. I saw that topic on Talk bass but haven't had time to respond to it other than basically. The pickup that I make that has people talking is a MM size pickup that has 8 individual coils and magnets in it. One humbucking pair for each string. The original idea was to give each string it's own output. It's still very much a prototype pickup design. I have only made two of them and they are in a very expensive luthiers shop waiting for the right project so it's difficult to give an honest representation of how well they compare to a Wal pickup. It should be noted that a large part of the Wal sound comes from the Preamp they use. My pickup is designed to be passive.

As for the look, they look just like a Music Man pickup with 8 big Neodymium magnets showing through the black cover.

The cost of one of these prototypes at this point is $275 each because they are very fussy to make.

Thanks again!"

So, my question is: A wals preamp is active, but the pickups are passive correct? When he says designed to be passive, does that mean they're only going to work with a passive preamp or they're simply passive themselves? I'm not very knowledgeable about the electronics side of bass yet, I just know what I think sounds good,,
