That's what I thought. There's certainly not enough tension to warrant a truss rod. But hey, I'm no luthier.

That's what I thought. There's certainly not enough tension to warrant a truss rod. But hey, I'm no luthier.
Well, this dialog was super interesting. And I gotta say, I'm not particularly happy.
Let's see now. We have revs with:
- Nothing
- Round, non adjustable truss tube
- Hex adjustable truss rod

I went through hell getting mine. They are very much a trial and error type of company. I'm glad mine works and is a good bass, and mostly that it's correctly compensated for lefty intonation. The first one bought wasn't. So you righties have it easy.
There are plenty of crappy recordings of the bass out there.
The pickup is hot. A little attention to detail leads to very sweet tone.

And on another note, my spruce top fretless does not have a truss rod nut, has nothing but a wooden block. The number in the bass is 1107, meaning July 2011 manufacture from what I'm finding out here on the Interwebs.

Curtis at Aquila USA emailed me to say that he has "been given feedback that these [Thunderguts] don't readily fit the solid body bass openings without dispensing with the factory end piece and making a knot. They are fine with hollow body instruments."
I have a hollow body, and once I receive the Thunderguts I ordered today, I'll post my impressions.
By the way, the ordering instructions at aquilausa.com are somewhat confusing. While I ordered from eBay, you can get them slightly cheaper from Curtis. He says, "I haven't yet gotten up a Paypal button. Just go to your Paypal page and click the send money button, put in the $20.50 to [email protected] and you're done."

LOL. That totally reminded me of this.
The YouTube video of the Italian-speaking guy doing a side-by-side comparison of Pahoehoes and Thunderguts doesn't show the latter in the best light, because the bass produces some farty rattles. Just sayin'.

I had the same reaction to that video & totally lost interest in the strings initially!
However, I did get the opportunity to try the Aquila's out & I'm so glad I gave them a shot! They really sound remarkably similar to the oem string, but are louder (both acousticaly and electrically), and offer a broader frequency response.
There are multiple sound clips of the Aquila Thundergut's on my website, as well as a direct comparison to the Pahoehoe's where I just play the open strings and an 'E' major scale.

I had the same experience as Justin. When I first heard/saw that video, it didn't draw me in to buy the strings. Later I tried them. The video doesn't do them justice. I loved the bass initially, but I love it a whole lot more with these Thundergut strings. Tuning stability is about 10 times what the stock strings offer, and, yes, the tone is more focused.
