These u-basses sound overdriven on all the videos I pull up. Just how clean and clear sounding are they? Anyone?

They're plenty clean. Probably not being recorded into good mics.

The piezo's are hot. If the people doing the recording aren't padding the signal upwards of -20db, it is easily sending all of my speakers into a tizzy.

Vakmere, here's a little demo I posted on Youtube of mine (before I got Thunderguts). I can't remember if I posted this one earlier in this thread. It's just recorded on an iPhone 4, but it sounds plenty clean on my speakers.

"from what I understand is, the very newest U-basses have them. We never had any problems w/ the necks, but they decided recently to add one on."

My UBass was purchased 1-4-12 from American Musical Supply and it has the same thing that "looks" like a truss rod. My Mfgr box had a bright green round sticker that had "RH" "9/24" written in pen. Perhaps it is some sort of QC sticker with a date of 9/24 (2011)???

Interesting...usually manufacturers don't get into the business of adding unnecessary costs that aren't needed
