Kala UBass Megathread, Part 2

The preamp may be of some value if you are running into a PA (using your bass rig or not). I ran into this a while back. Wasn't getting any volume when I ran through a direct box into my rig and out to the PA. I plugged in an MXR Micro Amp I happened to have in my bag and it solved the problem. I posted videos in the first part of this thread, but so you won't need to search, here you go. Not the greatest quality(iPhone video) but you may get the idea. From that night:

Teaser clip (Aquila Thundergut on U-Bass > Empress ParaEq with treble cut 10db broadly at 2.5k), no compression or normalization, etc.:

Note the decent sustain at the end and relatively in-tune octave glissando! Aquila's have their advantages!

Excellent - thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the full review at your site.

I thought I'd say something about the signal from this bass.
I think it has been mentioned before.

I find the signal from this bass extremely hot. To the point where it Is easy to distort. When I played out live with the UBass, while my bandleader was trying to dial a good sound, it didn't take much for him to distort the tone.

I'm actually going to experiment with using the Active input on my combo because everything sounds so hot via the passive input.

Cool. Have you guys heard Eric Johnson's version of Manic Depression? You should check it out.

I am happy using the Behringer ADI21 direct to a PA. I have the -20db PAD on, which got rid of a distortion. I then use the mid freq control and and the 3-band EQ to get it sound nice through the PA. I have a big subwoofer in the house system, so I don't need to enhance the low end. Sometimes, I have to take it back a tick or two as it can get boomy.

An acoustic preamp might be necessary for proper impedance matching. Precision and Jazz pickups have a much different impedance than a piezo. An acoustic preamp matches it up in the output to make it friendlier for amps, PAs and pedals.

Wonder what would happen if you "flashed" that knot with a propane torch really fast and melted it together? I have done that with nylon rope knots and, of course, shrink tubing before. Maybe someone will try with an old set of strings.

edit: or a drop of super glue might work even better

Ill ask Mimmo about that. Good question!

I have a set coming this week. Has anyone put them on a sub solid body? Will the knots fit in the holes on the back of the body?

I don't know if you have read the whole thread, but, when you get the new strings, please try using both the grommets from the stock strings along with a knot.

I was thinking about adding superglue next time, too.

Don't you mean the holes were too Big?

A knot plus the Red Grommet from the stock strings should work in any situation, I would think.

Ha, no, too small. For each string, there is a cavity in the back where the string end is supposed to hide so it doesn't jut out beyond the body. A knot is too big to fit inside the cavity (at least on the E and A strings), giving you this nasty sticky-out string end.

The stock strings that came with my bass have a new end fastener, BTW. No little red grommet thingy.
