Kala UBass Megathread, Part 2

Aquila string update... (continued from last thread)

Well- these stiff, white strings have already stabilized! (2 days instead of 2 weeks.) When it comes to the tuning & installation categories, Thunderguts are a decisive win over Pahohoe's. Just make sure they are the 'corrected' new formula strings!

Reserving final judgement until after a gig, session or two, naturally...

Same conclusion here. My strings have reached total stability.
It's incredible.

Tone - check
Stability - check.

It's all up to the last important element - durability.

To be continued.

Mimmo believes all the original strings are gone. It was a very small run.

So, in all likelihood, any new order will be the new strings.
If for some reason you do get an old set, with a failure on the D or G strings, he is happy to replace the set.

Is there a non-ebay location where I could order the Aquila strings? My google-fu is failing me.

Thought I'd pass along how I got the Thunderguts locked at the tuner post.

If you watch the tuning video from Kala for the stock strings, Mike Upton basically says you lock the G string with a knot at the post.

My stock strings are in the bag so I don't know for sure you if you could do those that way - I think you can - but with the Thunderguts the G fit inside the hole at the base of the post. It went in and far down enough where I was able to get a good lock at the post without having to tie a knot.

I am going to throw caution to the wind and take just the U-Bass to this Saturday morning's Shabbat service. The ease of a much smaller bass case appeals to me. Also, I find I am content with just the ADI21. I have no amp at that venue, straight to PA. I detest dry bass to the PA, I must have even just a modest amount of control of my sound where I sit.

Do it. I've used mine with just an MXR M-80 active DI for a bit of tone control and warmth at open mike nights to good effect. As long as your sound man's awake, it's a great portable setup.

SUB Impressions +1 Weeks In:

It's a great bass, so far. I'm digging the on-board tone and volume controls much more than I thought I would. There have been some minor adjustments. The U-Bass 2 sits further out from my body since it has a sound box and I strap to the headstock. The SUB sits closer in and the bridge is much closer to the rear strap peg.

Still deciding the best place for right hand position. Clearly they intend you to use the slight shelf they left at the end of the fingerboard. OTOH, just behind the stop-o-matic style bridge is very comfortable place to rest my right when I use a pick. (A felt pick is perfect for these strings, BTW.)

Little things are nice as well. Rocking out the bass runs at the end of "Footloose" on our New Year's show on the SUB felt great. It was really like having a tiny bass guitar in a lot of ways. OTOH, being able to switch to the U-Bass 2 when the guitarist switched to his Gibson acoustic was a nice touch as well. :D

I'm definitely interested in acquiring a set of Acquilas for testing on both instruments.

On the 2nd I posted here asking how to tell if my Thunderguts were an older version. Just had some tuning issues, etc. Minutes later Frank (SBassman) PM'd me saying that Mimmo, the owner of Aquila would be contacting me. Then...moments later I received a PM from Mimmo! He introduced himself and asked for my mailing address. Two days later...BAM!!! Two sets of strings arrived at my door! This is amazing! Italy to California so fast! The only two things more amazing is the tone and feel of these strings! Absolutely LOVE this strings! Thanks so much Frank, and Mimmo! Mimmo...your customer service impeccable!

Don't thank me - it's all Mimmo. When he gets involved, look out. :) I told you you'd be surprised at how fast those strings arrived. Very glad to hear you're enjoying them.
