Kala UBass Megathread, Part 3

I used the U-Bass for the Bible Blues Band practice last night as we are preparing for a July 28th festival gig. Odds are good that I will be using the U-Bass. :)

And I will get to use my full GK 4x10 setup for the first time outside of my house. The festival is an outdoor thing at a church in Dayton, so big and loud amps are welcomed. :D

I apologize in advance again for asking something that's probably already been addressed. Also, you all seem to have gotten over the novelty of the ubass and are concentrating on amplification and recording stuff, but what the hell

So I got the thunderguts. Can someone please explain how to string these? Do the E and A just go straight through, and the D and the G have to be pulled through and wrapped around and all that? Aren't you not supposed to really stretch them? Or do you just pull as hard as you can on the G and D so you can properly get them around the posts?

Hard to briefly outline restringing, but heres some tips for the Thunderguts:

Do not pre stretch!!!!!!

E and A: Secure at bridge with double knot. Pull to tuner & try to get close to pitch (small vise grips help), then push into post and start turning. They will lock on without slipping with about one turn around the post.

D and G: Double knot again at bridge. You'll need to get a loop under/loop over established to hold the string. Research how acoustic guitar b and e strings are installed to get the gist. Vise grips really help here! Try to stretch them as close to pitch as you can before turning on the post.

I really need to get a camera and make a video. So little time....

People will cite different techniques, but here is how I string with Thunderguts:

E and A lock at the tuner just by shoving them into the slit of the post.

D needs to be wound and then flipped over.

G fits right into the hole of the post and can be wound like a regular string.

No real stretching needed. After it is wound, you can do the slightest pulls on the string to get it tight, but that's it. It doesn't need more, and too forceful of a pull will damage the string. It is not rubber. It's a blend of something like a nylon, and it will get damaged if you pull too hard.

While bringing it up to tune, go slowly, and keep an eye out for anything binding up near the nut. It's a good idea to occasionally lift the string out of the nut and place it back down. This ensures it won't get stuck there.

Repeat across a 48 hour period, and stand back and enjoy mega stable tuning and amazing tone.

If you already realize that the question has been addressed are you aplogizing in advance for being lazy or just not wanting to know the answer bad enough to look for yourself? A search of this thread for "thunderguts" got 77 hits; including yours. I do not mean to be an ass but please make an effort yourself before asking someone else to make an effort for you.

edit:

A lesson in irony.

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because the animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves.

This ends today's lesson.

edit no. 2: yes, this is one of those "get off my lawn" moments!

You may not have meant to be an ass, but you succeeded. Huzzah!

Ends? Is one end different than the other? Is one side meant to be strung through the tuners and the other side knotted?

If your strings came with ends, string it that way. If they didn't come with ends, then:
- Take the red grommets/washers from the stock strings, if they have those
- Slide onto the thundergut, then tie a knot. The grommet+knot will serve to anchor the string at the bridge.

I think I read from the Kala rep in this thread just this week that the ends on the new TGs are ready and don't require the user to knot/melt them themselves.

Just note that the ends May only be coming from Kala.
Other dealers may only be selling the plain strings.

I'll have to check into that.

And either way, it's very likely that there's all kinds of stock out there without ends. I know I have a few spare sets - with no ends.
