Kala UBass Megathread, Part 3

I wonder why my experience with Thunderguts has been different regarding the low end content? The side by side comparison recording I did still had all the punch and fundamental. The TG's definitely do have a lot more treble content. Is it possible there are psychoacoustic factors playing a part? (i.e. less perceived lows due to the human ear favoring highs)

I try to be as objective as possible & recognize everyone has preferences regarding feel. But I still get he same room filling bottom with the TG's as the Pahoehoes. As soon as I switched strings on tour, I asked the foh engineer if he noticed any difference. He didn't. Just my experience! :)

I have had the same experience, filling rooms with very fat, creamy low end - with the Thunderguts.

Last night I used my Fishman with a Stingray...no Ubass until I get the strap situation sorted. I love it. Tight, focused compression. Useful eq. The depth knob works great for my EUB's and Ubass...along with the phase switch! I dunno...I still think its the way to go. Lots of options and applications. And it makes the Ubass a real dubstyle gut puncher. Using it my electronica/jazz/rock band at a festival this weekend!

Last night was the first gig I've played without the fretless Ubass...I seriously felt like I almost set the fingers on my left hand on fire sliding around. It really hurt! Like finger carpet burn or something. So maybe I shouldn't rehearse with the Ubass 5 hours a day?!?! On the plus side, my bass playing is really sounding better these days. The band leader said afterwards that I sounded "more nimble" and that my solos were "extremely interesting." guess I've needed the woodshedding anyway.

Last night was the first gig I've done in a long time without my U-Bass as well, hopturn! I wont lie, even though I didnt need it for the set, I thougbt of it more than a few times!

Well, I guess I'll be ordering a Fishman Platinum di then! Youve convinced me its necessary. :-)

The drive is awesome, but the VT is magical clean, furry, thumpy, facemelting, and everything in between. I set mine on furry, I. E. barely driven and warm. Drive 10:30-11:00, character 10:00, bass noon, mid 1:00, treble 8:00, level straight up. Even without overdrive, the character knob seems to tweak that natural curve you would want from a good clean acoustic preamp.

Tim - My findings exactly and very close to my VT settings as well. I have the older VT pedal (single channel not the newer multi channel with memory). With the drive just barely bumped it adds the warmth needed to overcome the only attribute of the Ubass that I don't like - the dreaded right hand string finger noise. I really tried hard to eq that out with the Fishman but could only get about 90% of the way there. Features I loved on the Fishman were the phantom power, XLR out and compression. Fortunately I have the XLR and compression built into my combo amp so I'm ok there.

I have the old VT and the deluxe. For other acoustic situations I have the Baggs Para-EQ. I use the deluxe for EB and one or both of the others for U-Bass. I have DI and everything else but compression. Compression has never really been my friend. Maybe just the upright player in me. But the VT definitely has a great natural tube compression effect. Last night I had a perfect sound from the amp and I kicked the VT and it got better. For both the U-Bass and for the P-Bass.

Yesterday was the first time I picked up my electric in a long time.
Wow. What a difference. Had to stretch my hands again.

Took Hours to get comfortable again.

I need to stop being so focused on One bass at a time and play both regularly.

I'm so glad I stopped at the store yesterday to see if they had an acoustic UBass in...this thing is awesome. I rewound/clipped the strings, tightened up the rattling jack, and oiled the fretboard and this thing is a whole lot of fun to play. Even if I do like the mahogany I think I'll have to keep this one.

I ordered up the Fishman Platinum to go with it. I've got my first jam with the UBass Tuesday, and another on Saturday. Should have the EQ by the second jam.

Hold, you really should reconsider the international shipping part. As long as the buyer is willing to pay the cost, you should be willing to ship to Canada, Oz, UK, etc. Shipping to Canada is only a few dollars more. Oz is about $5 to $10 more. UK about the same. The paperwork for sending international is not difficult.

Yeah - but - it really can be a headache. I don't blame him.
I shipped overseas once, and it took 6 months for the transaction to complete. I was really upset we were going to be mopping that one up for many more months. It finally arrived for the guy.

I'll never deal outside the U.S. again.
