This is my world right now... 49th birthday tomorrow, and I threw my back out pretty hard at a Jam on Thursday (not even really doing anything but turning to cue the drummer during a tune!)
Yesterday I had two back-to-back gigs in a small town here in wine country (Carlton, Oregon for the locals)... One group played from 4 - 7 while the other played from 7 -10 about a block away... Had my amp on my trusty pseudo Rock-n-Roll cart, cables all attached, U-Bass and stand in hand and made the transition to the second gig in about 5 minutes. Really nice to roll in, plug in the power and go on the second song...
How much do we all love the U-Bass?!?! This thing just keeps on pumping out killer low end that sits so well in the mix. I honestly bought mine a year ago mostly as a lark with an eye towards using it for a few occasional acoustic gigs, and it is now my go-to bass for about 80% of my dates! I love playing my upright and all, but when I'm packing for a gig it makes so much more sense to 'go small' that I rarely pull it out for anything other than a fully acoustic date. Thanks Kala!!

What strings are you currently using?
So is it correct to assume that there is no such animal as a lefty fretless U Bass in any woods? Kala's site seems to confirm this, but I'm hoping they just don't bother updating it with such a trivial detail. Although weeks of fruitless searching would appear to indicate it's the case.
Anyone know better? : )

Klaus - very generous of you to share those.
Unless you run into really stubborn frets! The radius on nail clippers is a little too small. Best to use the right tool for the job!
Thing is that getting the frets out is only half of the job, the easier half. I know I'd be up for the rest but I'm dubious the result would be satisfactory. Talk about voiding the warranty! : )
But, alas, it does appear that either a defret or switching a right fretless are my only options, and as less painless as the switch may appear, in this case it likely isn't, given that it doesn't seem I can just reposition the bridge, I'd need to get a lefty with piezo from Kala. From what I can tell, and I'd love to be corrected, the piezos in the U Bass bridge are not an easy swap job. Does anyone know for a fact if the bridge can be repositioned without issue?
If anyone in the NYC vicinity has already done either (as in not theoretically : ) ) shoot me a PM!
I would think that a defret is significantly easier than switching a righty to a lefty.
Also - write to Kala on this. Maybe they can help.

+1, thanks Klaus.
Really adds some class to this thread to have Bach transcriptions for u-bass.
I'm woeful trying to actually play them, of course, but that first chord in measure 4 is a keeper- 8-10-x-10 plucked with thumb and first two fingers.
Cello version in the original key of G starts at 3:15.
