Kala UBass Megathread, Part 7

I just went to install the Gilli UXB810 on my solid body 21" scale bass uke with stringthrough holes but the strings are too short. Seems Galli only made them for the Kala acoustic U-bass. Too bad, I would have used them on a number of my bass ukes. I sent a suggestion that they make a 2" longer set too.

I found another bass in my collection that fit the Galli strings... either I'm a truly mediocre bass player, or they're as bad as I think with frets and a piezo. Every touch I made to the strings rattled against the frets no matter how careful I was, and the round wound zing was just as bad, the only way I can imagine they would work is on a totally fretless bass, but the zing would still be there. Not for me WHAT-SO-EVER! If anybody wants them, just pay for mailing.

It seems a setup issue to me. I use them on a fretted bass with no issue, and rather had the opposite problem (too distant from keyboard) until I mitigated using the truss rod.

I was pretty careful about the set up. I had the same problem with a set of Pyramid and Kala round wounds on two other basses, as did the other bass player in my uke group. Don't have that problem with the LaBella/Gold Tone flatwounds I have on 4 of my other fretted piezo solid bodies.

Have you tried turning your fiddling with your tone knob? Sometimes that can eliminate some of the higher frequency extraneous noise.

I just put kohanmike's set on my Journeyman. I like 'em. Waiting for them to settle in, tuning them every few minutes like they were classical guitar strings. Nylon is like that I suppose. I have not found them to have as short of sustain as some others have said. They feel better to my right hand fingers than any other string I've tried so far.

My experience with the Galli strings is the opposite of yours, I love them. The tension and feel are fantastic. Also, because of the nylon wrap there is no corrosion, unlike the metal strings and I have had them on since the end o December. I have the on my solid SUB. I had to do a work around to get them to fit. I tried them in with 2.5 mm Spectra Dyneema cord from a local marine store. The cord is strung through a small jewelry bead in the body. You probably need to do a complete set up on the bass. I was asked by Galli how much longer the string needed to be to fit. I estimate about 2 cm.

So I received a brand new exotic mahogany UBass today. There are 2 things I’m concerned with.

1. There’s a blemish and glue residue around the bridge. Something I’d expect to see from a ‘b stock’ instrument.

2. There were wood scraps inside the bass when I received it. Not sure if these are leftover from manufacturing or if the internal bracing is damaged.

I am sure that somewhere this info has been covered, but would you help a newbiew to Kala like to to understand a couple of things ?

- What's happening with the SUB (e.g. solid) Kala basses ? Still in production ? No mention on their website
- What's happening with California (solid, but US made I understand) ? Very few available stock .. will be discontinued ?
- What are the factors to consider to buy a solid vs acoustic (and what's the difference between oval hole models and solid tops like the Hutch Huthinson) ?

sorry for the many Qs!

thank you, Paolo

Sorry, I can't answer your other questions, but one big difference between the solid body and "acoustic" models is the sound of the instrument. You can't really play the acoustic models acoustically (unless you're playing only for yourself!), but once plugged in to proper amplification, they tend to sound more like an upright bass. If you want a bass guitar sound, the solid body models are probably better. As for the sound hole, I doubt that makes much difference, because (again) you'll need further amplification anyway.

BTW, I've played a Solid Spruce/Mahogany acoustic-electric for 5 years now and like it very much.

I found that string choice was the most difference in sub or a acoustic plugged in. Very little difference in sound. I have only had two subs, solid hog, solid spruce, and 5 similar other brands and everyone hears a little differently. Also of course, amps and equalizers, pedals etc can have a huge effect.

I am sold on the Galli Nylon Strings. I have them on my Journeyman. Used it at band rehearsal yesterday. Guitar, Drums, Bass, Vocalist. Rain King - Counting Crows, Give Me One Reason - Chapman, Wicked Game - Isaak, Neon Moon - B&D, I Fall To Pieces - Patsy, It Ain't You Baby It's Me - Norah Jones / The Little Willies.
This little bass really held it's own. These strings are much less sticky, less thuddy with better sustain than the stock or the Aquila Thunderblack. It may be true that those strings provide the "quintessential" ubass tone but the Galli strings make the ubass more usable in a general band context. IMHO
