Kala UBass Megathread, Part 7

Package arrived today for the new strings. They are a five string Thundergut set with one Thunder Red string. The Packing List is for 1 AQ-TG-4; Aquila U-BASS 4 Strings. My Order ID sheet is for 1 Aquila Thunder Reds (U-BASS Strings 91U) $24.99.
If you go to the Kala Store page you will see that the Thunder Reds are back in stock, but the price is $39.99. Someone from Kala is supposed to call me tomorrow.

Jeff

I wrote to them as soon as I saw the strings. I got a response to send an order number, which I did. Didn't hear anything else today.

With people going to NAMM, we might be waiting a long time for our Reds.

That is a major bummer, by rights the set I managed to get should have been yours.

I haven't been playing a lot on my reds, but they seem to be settling in a bit more.
I would say that sound and tone-wise, I don't hear that they are a quantum leap from the Rumblers.
The biggest improvement as far as I'm concerned is the decreased diameter on the E and A.

I am more excited now for the LaBellas to drop.
I don't care what they cost if they really are wound correctly to fit all sizes of acoustic and solid.
In my experience, once I put a set of LaBella black nylons on a bass, that's the last time the strings get changed.

There is a woman named Kara who is in charge of web sales at Kala. The receptionist said she would call me tomorrow. I don't see why she would be at the NAMM show, leaving no one to attend to web sales. They have all my info. and, apparently, Thunder Reds are back in stock, so dropping them in a new envelope and sending them out tomorrow should not be a big deal. I'll let you know how it goes.

Tomorrow I'll get the Thunder Red situation sorted out. I did notice from the single Thunder Red string I received that they seemed to be not nearly as sticky as the Thunderguts. I do agree with your assessment, based on your Youtube demo, that they don't seem to be a major improvement over what is currently available. Given that the new price is $39.99 these may be a tough sell.

On a more positive note, I checked out the info. on the new LaBellla strings. I may be interested in them for my SUB. What I don't understand is why they would both white and black tapewound strings for 21", 23" and 25" scales. That's a lot of different sets for what seems like a relatively small market.

The 25" might fit the Michael Kelly Sojourn 4 Travel Bass, which is a nice instrument that's been nearly completely orphaned for lack of replacement strings.

Small market, yes. But I'm glad they're doing it!

I'm glad they are doing it too. The more options, the better.
The one thing I'm curious about withe the new Labella strings is their construction. Th Pyramid strings are roundwound on a nylon core, with low tension. It seems to me that the new LaBellas would need to have a similar construction in order to maintain a low tension on an instrument designed for low tension strings. I'd like to find out more about how these strings are put together.

I have a question. Has anyone effectively purchased an ebay preamp an ran it on a short 1/4 cord say to a small box on a belt on an older passive ubass? My micro bass says it has a ub-300t preamp. There are uk-300t uke preamps for less than $20. Would this work?

I can't find anything on the net about the Belkat ub-300t but there is an obscure Chinese-made U-Bass clone that uses a uk-300t.

Maybe the "ub" just stands for U-Bass, but its the same preamp.

I'm not sure why you feel you'd want a pre-amp for a vintage acoustic. Mine has plenty of output for driving an amp, every bit as hot as my S-U-B.

Plenty of folks do fine without a pre-amp.

If you still feel you need one, the Fishman B-II is three times the price of what you're looking at, but I can pretty much guarantee it's more than three times better.

If you want the high-pass filter function to control the low frequencies from the piezo transducer, the consensus here seems to be an F-deck or the Fishman Platinum Pro, which has graphic eq and a compressor.

Not really vintage, only a few days old. But, it is nice to adjust a little bit of tone and volume without reaching to the amp. Just lazy. I started looking at the 300t to see what gold tone was putting in theirs. Not very expensive, but sounds as good as the shadow electronics I had in the solid hog bass I sold to my half deaf ears. I just don't practice enough fretless to jump between the 23" and 21". I get too set in my ways I guess and it is not as much fun to think. The passive is plenty hot, but I do run it in my passive input on my little Peavey Max 112 amp. Here is where I got my new passive spruce fretless.

However, they aren't doing the make an offer right now. I had never gotten a guitar in just the factory trapazoid box before. The box was torn up but the gig bag apparently protected it. UPS waited until I did a full and complete inspection. Perhaps not the best box out there, but I do enjoy playing with my Zoom B2.1u as well. I had looked at the fishman external for the double bass, but $65 kinda defeats the purpose of buying cheap. I have also learned to hold the kala in a more upright position which allows less discomfort on the damaged ulnar nerves in my right hand and arm which is one reason I sold my nice hog bass. Now I just need to find a well used $150.00 s-u-b to refinish. If any one has a sub they don't need that has been around the bend, let me know. I will be selling my two month old GT m-bass as the "boss" thinks I have purchased too many basses since May. Only 5, what is she thinking. Of course, I have purchased about as many guns too. I am also learning that a floating thumb is working for me too as I have always anchored in the past. Much more freedom and less stress on the hand.

This popped up in an unrelated string thread:
La Bella just announced their Tapewounds for the U-Bass. I do not have the exact specs but I believe they are for 23-25" scale length instruments. Those will work perfectly for you!

(they will be available for Pre-Order very soon)

...which is a good thing because I don't like bying strings from anyone other than BSO, especially for the ubass considering what I've been reading about Kala's webstore competence.

Since the labellas are coming out, I decided to get back in the ubass game. I picked up an exotihogany from samash. It's a newer one with the one piece bridge. This is a rare one that survived kala's spotty QC. Good intonation, frets, and even string to string volume.

I wonder how the action will be with the tapewounds. With pyramids, it was a struggle to get playable action without daveware level mods. I'm hoping these are large gauged enough to set up easy.
