Kala UBass Megathread, Part 7

My intonation test for the Thunder Reds is up on YouTube.

Invalid Link Removed

This was recorded direct through an Alesis iO2 to MacBook.

The bass is my vintage 2011 S-U-B, which was set up for Pyramid wound strings with dead-on intonation.
I replaced the nut to raise the action a bit from where I had the Pyramids.

I used my trusty old Korg CA-30 tuner.
The LCD display doesn't have great contrast, but the center needle should be visible.
Plug in your own tuner if you want, the bass is in the left channel.

Tone controls set fully CCW, or off, as flat as I know how to make the eq on a S-U-B.

I'll make a video later today playing a little to demo their sound.

Put up a video with impressions of the Thunder Reds.

Actual playing commences at 5:42.
The strings are still stretching, the G string is going a little flat toward the end.

Dave,

Thanks for the very informative vids on the Thunder Reds. I'm surprised that the strings, especially the E and A, are so elastic. I was expecting them to be harder and higher in tension than the Thunderguts.
Mine are still "in transit" on the USPS tracking page. Based on past experience I'll be lucky to get them by this Friday (Jan.24).
I just hope I don't end up with Thunderguts like SBassman. I wonder if SBassman clicked the "Buy Now" button instead of the "AQ-R-TG-4" to the left of it. I spoke to Kala on Friday and brought this to their attention. BTW, the Thunder Reds are now Sold Out on the Kala site.

Thanks for the great demo davewave!

I have been diggin' on my SUB with the pahoehoes. I am in no hurry to change because I like them so much.

I just completed a mod of my own...I added a thumb rest, custom made it myself from a piece of rosewood. I love moving around a lot between the bridge and the neck so I wanted a nice long rest to accomodate that.

Anyhow, I am tickled pink with the result:

Sorry for the grainy pic. I don't have great light, but you get the idea...sometime I will take some nicer pics.

No way, mon. I read the warnings in the thread, and I got it right.
My invoice is for Reds. They blew it.

And now, I would expect I will wait forever since there stock is depleted. Beyond frustrating.

For me there will be a long wait for the strings with customs etc. If I don't open that package and see a red envelope, someone's gonna owe me a free set!

I ordered my strings before Dave did I should get the Thunder Reds. We'll see.

Let us know how you do. My invoice is attached - to prove my innocence. :crying:

My invoice is just like yours an probably the same as Davewave's. I ordered mine first, then Davewave and then you. I'm hoping they at least get it right on the first two out of three orders. They did not have many sets in stock because I checked back just a few hours later and they were already sold out.

I am in a weird place. Kind of want a Kala, but don't need one.

How are you guys using your Kala? I would use mine for practice (I play at church pretty much every week so usually practicing).

Which is your fav Kala? Thinking about going with the basic U-Hog for 349.00.

Peace

I used mine primarily for couch noodling, but lots of pro musicians are gigging with them. They're great for practice but they'd be great in church too. Here's some examples of what can be done:

I highly recommend spending another 50 bucks and getting the exotic mahogany. It's constructed more solidly, it has better hardware, and the strings are more easily accessible through the back hatch which isn't there on the rumbler.

Check out the 2014 U-Bass catalog, nice pin-up of Tal Wilkenfeld, and some tasty Cali exotic woods.
The string descriptions on page 14 are new as well, and pretty accurate IMO.

10% off everything they sell on the web through the end of the month.

That's a great U-Bass mod, looks very professional, much better than those stick-on thumb rests Kala sells for them.

Those cherryburst S-U-Bs are my favorite color, they weren't an option when I got mine.

Package arrived today for the new strings. They are a five string Thundergut set with one Thunder Red string. The Packing List is for 1 AQ-TG-4; Aquila U-BASS 4 Strings. My Order ID sheet is for 1 Aquila Thunder Reds (U-BASS Strings 91U) $24.99.
If you go to the Kala Store page you will see that the Thunder Reds are back in stock, but the price is $39.99. Someone from Kala is supposed to call me tomorrow.
