Kappalite 3015 alternative

I'm thinking about building a cab in which the plans call for a Kappalite 3015 (non LF). I am looking for a less expensive alternative, weight isn't an issue so I don't really need Neo speakers. I don't know much about speakers, or cabs but as far as I can tell the Kappa-Pro 15A seems pretty similar, at least as far as I can tell, but like I said, I don't know much.

So my question is, would the Kappa-Pro 15A be a good alternative? If not what would be, or am I pretty much gonna have to bite the bullet and get the Kappalite 3015?

I would chose the Legend CB158 or Delta Pro 15A over the Kappa Pro 15A as an alternative to the Kappliate 3015. They both have better excursion than the Kappa Pro 15A, and that's going to be your limiting factor. The Delta Pro 15A will have a bit bigger bottom end and a bit more energy up high (on axis at least), while the Legend CB158 will be a bit tighter and voiced a bit more like a traditional bass cab.

Exactly the kind of information I was looking for, from someone who knows what they are talking about. I should also note, that this will be a ported cab with no horn

You'll probably want a bigger box than what you can get away with using the 3015.

Get the right speaker to start with, if its worth making the box, its worth doing it right. Weight isn't the only advantage of that speaker. Also the speaker itself retains value due to the amount of people wanting to do self builds, where it is often recommended.

These do look like very nice choices (especially, imho, the Delta).

I know the OP said a neo isn't a requirement, but would you consider the Delta Lite II 2515 another viable choice? Very good range, good Xmax, very good SPL, but more bucks (although still under the 3015 by a good bit).

I was leaning towards the Delta, I will check out your recommendation though.

Weight isn't the only advantage of that speaker.

This is really the important thing to look at. Its not the weight of the 3015 that makes it so fantastic, its the sensitivity, frequency response, which are by products of using a smaller, lighter, and just as powerful magnet.

Xmax is the Delta's Achilles' heel. But otherwise it's pretty darned attractive, especially at $95 a pop. Here's one on evilbay for $80, shipped.

At that price, might consider a 215 or two 115s.

Its a 215 cab which is the reason price is a concern. I don't really want to sink 500+ bucks into a pair of drivers when I dont really need a new cab. This is just a free time project.

Not really, the Delta Pro 15A was recommended to me in the first reply of this thread by some one who is knowledgeable about the question at hand.

I dont even know what the power handeling is

Duke's advice is good about what models to choose if you're not going to use the correct driver for that particular plan.

But if you're going to use a different driver, why not go with a different plan, as well?

Porting that's perfect for a 3015, is not going to be optimum for a Delta Pro.

For the best results, choose your driver first, then find plans for it. Delta Pros and Legends are both popular drivers. There have to be some good plans out there for them...

I guess I can build the cab first and get the speakers later. I guess Ill do the smart thing and buy the right drivers for the cab.

The Starliner cab was just a suggestion. Eminence publishes proven cab designs for all their drivers.

That cab seems cool, I want to build it. I just dont know when it will happen. I have a bass and a couple of guitars to finish before I start another project.
