Keep in Bag or Stand?

Personally I always keep mine in gig bags. I suppose it depends on people's circumstances, pets, children, etc. The obvious plus for bags is they help to protect against moisture and dust. Also, I don't suffer from the "cant see it, so wont play it" phenomenon. ;)
+1

I think keeping them in a stand makes them far more prone to falling, temp changes, sun exposure, dust, and well, ignoring them. I do use a stand (sometimes) to go to the bathroom or go get some water. My teacher said: "Whenever you're not eating or sleeping, have your bass on." So I go the extra mile and go to the bathroom with my bass on. :)

When asked "What is the greatest obstacle to enlightenment?" the Buddha replied: "Laziness."

It's part of my habits now to wipe the strings/fingerboard off with a rag after playing and putting it in it's bag.

I leave mine on a stand. I have found that by leaving my instruments out in plain view, I an unable to ignore them and will practice more often. I also happen to have a dedicated room for my toys, safe from my kids.

Do you never make your bed? Do you leave kitchen cabinet doors open? Do you leave off the top of the toothpaste tube?

Then leave it on the stand.

But if you care about cleanliness and neatness, put it away in the bag at the end of the day.

I have kids and pets, but am fortunate to have a dedicated practice space.....well it's also my home office.....I use wall hangers so my youngest can't touch and where there are less likely to have accidents. I also like the look and the fact that it makes my 'workspace' look more fun. My space is in the basement, I have no windows and a dehumidifier. It works for me.

I know someone who knows Jeff Beck's grounds keeper, and apparently he keeps a massive load of guitars on stands (not in cases) in a big warehouse with a leaky roof, and they're all going weird. Naughty Jeff.

You make it sound like us stand guys are not anal retentive! We've got our routines too, I put my cases away very carefully, where they gather a bit of dust in the closet. My basses are as clean as the rest of the clean house. Hell I tie my chords with cable ties and put them on my amp at the end of the day. :p

I have a cheap "beater" bass that I keep on a wall hanger for convenient practice access. It doesn't get particularly dusty if I play it every day, which is the whole point of keeping it out. I think it's safer from accidents on the wall hanger than it would be on a conventional guitar stand, and also takes up less space. I've even been told by a guitar repairman that wall hangers are better for the neck than other stands or leaning it against the wall in a gig bag. The only downside to the wall hanger for me is the risk of a fall in the event of an earthquake (I'm in CA). That's why I use a cheap bass for practice.

My main gigging basses stay in their gig bags so I can grab them and run to the gig quickly. Onstage, I prefer to keep my bass in the gig bag rather than on a stand to better protect it, and also to avoid tempting potential thieves.
