Kev's "Bird of Prey" a NMG prototype

Carve it before you get all down on it. It doesn't look like its plan without carving done.

...and if it's a bird of <bleeping> prey, inlay a bird of prey (the spaceship you were referencing.) Lots of choices there over nearly 6 decades of Trek...

And if you want an earth bird, consider this one.

I think I like the Original Series Bird of Prey as an inlay better than a Bat’leth. Have it cover a few frets. Top view of front view could work.

Hey man, ahhh what'cha doin???
It's not time for dye yet... :eyebrow:...

.. or is it...:smug:

Gonna take a scribe and put on your layout lines for carving? Why let metalworkers have all the fun with that?
I like that... kinda, but no.
Actually idea is to have the curl shadow on the front be black, then cut the bevels & dye in red. Hard contrast.
Then start to fade the red into a burst effect around the lower bout.
Just the back-shadow changes color and a kandy goes over that. :eyebrow: subtle.
But now... I'm underwhelmed with the depth of this curl.
I'm still gonna do it but I'm not as excited about the idea.

Cut the D'marz routes...

I asked nicely for the StewMac Dragon rasps.
(I've actually worn down a cheap set this year.)
I don't know the maker, but they are stamped with some kinda kanji.
My complements to the 8'year old girl who hand stitched them.
Yes... they are as good as everyone says. 👌

I just got the coarse ones.

Time for some bev'lagé🕺

Hi there.
I've neglected this thread.
Truth being... it's all just kinda blurred together right now.

I was thinking about weird inlay?
Yeah naw... Less is more. Someone told me that. I need to listen more.
It's also got normal nickel silver 3150 fret wire. I'm kinda tired of all that stainless & Evo gold Rockhewer used to do.
I did put a 16" to 20" compound radius on this board....with 2 sanding cauls and a leveling beam. Didn't take pictures. 🤷

This bass will go to my brother Bobby Devlin. Naturally... as he's been the face of Rockhewer for lo these past 10 years.

He's named / defined it.
Obviously still a bird of prey... specifically?

I showed him a pic with the wings dyed red... and some kinda ill conceived burst.
It looked cool from across the room.
He dug it. But then ..."that plain maple neck isn't cutting it... ya know what would look cool? "
*me: please don't say glitter rock white
...Bob: "Glitter Rock White".
Ok fine 👌

Here's the crappy die job. Would not have looked good under clear.
20250215_135813.jpg

Sanded that crap back...like the 3rd time.
Kinda felt like rubbing my feathers against a stone cliff face... it all makes sense now 😳
20250220_094215.jpg

Now it's got red shadows
That wasn't the plan 🤷

So I asked Don (Screaming Leaming) if he would save my butt by doing a (now) three stage paint job.
Blood red candy wings, GRW neck... & poly clear.

In the booth now🕺😎🤙

Oh yeah... I did another redesign (cut) of the Mockingbird. (Drawling hanging)
Bass specific... I call it the "Shlonghorn" Cut
... more on that later. 👌🥸

Glad you got that sage wisdom of less being more and took it!

I’m not always big on red instruments but the pics with color on… wow!

Props to you for hand-sanding a board radius. Every time I tried that, ended up "dishing" the board in the middle, becuause it gets twice as much sanding action as the ends, despite my best attempts to even it. I finally built a simple radius jig and am building a fret slot cutting jig. The Monkey can be taught! I'm in full build withdrawl after two MONTHS of boat work in exchange for 2 months of actual time on the water, which is a typical cost/benefit for boats. Word to the Wise: Don't buy a boat! Bass looks killer.

Honestly? We have a nice radius jig.... we quit using it.
Inlays have to be leved too... besides I prefer to cut inlay on a flat board.
We do it all at once.
3m cubitron and Mirka. Good abrasive makes all the difference.
It's twice as fast as setting up the jig.

...& my fat ass needs the exercise anyway. 🤣
