This is a really interesting exchange. I actually used a 1990, sealed Kicker 1000w RMS, C18 loaded in to a nice box for our bassist when his blew a coil. He was overwhelmed with the way his SVT400TH (I think) solid state rig performed through it. The entire band was.
They are very efficient and tight when tuned proper. Seems it was about 4.5 cubic feet and tuned around 35Hz at ~92@1w.
As to the OP yes, they can work if sealed and in the case of solid state amplifierstoo little power can easily be the issue If the amp is driven into hard clipping for long periods. Each time the amp clips the speaker stops moving until the end of that cycle of clipping and it will heat up the voice coil each time it does that. VC's have to move to be cooled.

Have you considered the effects of momentum and inertia, mass and acceleration?
Because of the way a low frequency speaker moves with regard to periodic time constants, a low frequency driver isn't going to stop moving for very line since it will be essentially mechanically slew rate limited during most of the transition so the end result will be more of a somewhat truncated triangle wave. To move that much mass accurately and reproduce the harmonic spectrum when fed a square wave would require motor strength many times higher than is possible in a conventional speaker. Also, since once the amp clips and the benefits of global feedback are instantly lost, there will be little control of the driver's cone at each extreme.
What does happen when a clipped signal is driven into a speaker is that the thermal power increases for 2 reasons. The first is due to the shape of the waveform, the area under the curve of a square wave is twice the area under the curve of a sine wave (for the same amplitude). The second reason is that the time averaged power increases because the net duty cycle increases when the amp is driven that hard.
This is why JBL recommends (for musical instrument speakers) to derate the power handling by 50%, to account for these 2 mechanisms.
I understand your point and fully understand the physics involved (have built amps from scratch and been using Thiele-Small for nearly 5 decades) but this simply worked beautifully.
It was not his permanent setup and did everything expected of it for a couple of weeks. Once back in the VW it was just as good as ever. All he wanted was muddy bass to better match the Taurus pedals/three piece stuff. I always rolled off the highs and mids on his channel.
When it works.. it works. ymmv
