As a white dude, I wouldn't want to go to an all black college. I would feel out of place.

It said so in the statistic sheets they sent to our homes that at my High School, white folk were a minority.
It shouldn't to hard to find a majority white school in Washington state.

Agreed. I could get a minority scholarship at JSU or Alcorn, both historically black, but I wouldn't consider it.
By the same token, I also wouldn't attend Mississippi University for Women.
Wait one second here. I can get a minority scholarship, and go to a college filled w women?
I wish I'd had known that when I was 20.

Jesus Cheese, you are way to ******** racially charged. The world has changed, it doesn't matter if your school is predominantly black, white, or chartreuse. What has your school accomplished? Do you like the program and atmosphere? How can you make your school better?
Those are the questions people should be considering, not what the ******* predominant race is.
Expand your culture.

This has got to be the dumbest post I have read in a long time. Did you even bother to read the post that I responded to? The guy was saying he would not want to go to a majority black school. I told him he could easily find a majority white school in Washington state, which is where that TB'er lives.
For what it's worth, every school I attended was majority white and I have spent my career working at majority white universities.
You might actually want to know what you are talking about.:scowl:

His post was the opposite of a stupid post, it sums up my feelings on the entire thread, which i stated since post #5 of this thread. I had no idea there were still "black" and "white" schools.
This is just proof that there are a number of TB'ers who want to start an argument whenever I start a thread and black and white is part of the topic. If you honestly think this thread is offensive or racist, then you seriously need to stop reading my posts.
I did not make a big deal about he schools where I worked or studied. I responded to a post.
For what it's worth, there are no white or black schools. The young man in the OP has chosen to attend a historically black school. In all of the states where there was legal segregation, the schools founded during that time are historically black, white, Native American, etc. These designations reflect a historical and formerly legal fact.
If you weren't so determined to be insulted, that would be obvious to you.
Dude, you are from Virginia, the home of a number of HBCUs like Hampton and Norfolk State. You should also know the history of segreagation and desegregation since Virginia played a major role in process going back to the 1950s.
i don't find it offensive at all, I've just been watching OT for the past few weeks and I've very surprised at the amount of black vs. white threads that have came up. Most of them have some point, but this one is just...a non-issue. I don't understand how it can be a big enough deal to warrant a news article about a kid choosing a college?
awake in school, knowing everything you just said, about what? That some schools have always been "white" or "black"? I must have been raised in the good part of town that moved on from color of skin finally. I will admit i slept alot in american history, especially the civil rights movement era - it's only something that VA schools have taught since 1st grade.
I'm not trying to insult you or argue with you, i'm just trying to seriously wrap my head around the idea of a school being white or black. Should my skin color matter? Do i deserve better or worse education because of it? I thought that skin color was just a color. I didn't know that it said what schools i should or shouldn't go to, and that it's a big enough deal to warrant a news article on my choice.
EDIT: Can you explain what HBCU stands for exactly? I can get the historically black college (?)...university? I dunno. I never understood why people couldnt' move on from race, that it didn't matter any more.

No, Karrot's post was stupid. If you had no idea there are still black colleges you're just ignorant of the current university situation. FAMU has a nearly 90% black student populace and Morehouse has nearly an 85% black student population. There are definitely still colleges that have very high black populations; and as a result are called black colleges, or historically black colleges.

You act as if a HBCU is in itself a negative thing. Do you feel that way about historically white schools? My point is that "race" seems to never be noticed unless the race is not white. White is so often seen as the default or natural state, and others are aberrations.
HBCU. That's the name of my daughter's soccer team ... the Humble Benevolent Champions of the Universe. Or something very much like that.
