I would recommend trying the old boss Heavy Metal pedal. Absolutely snarling b*st*rd of a distortion, lets you play with bass vs treble, so you dont completely lose the bottom end.

It is a long long way from overdrive - can almost sound like a bit crunch. Especially good if you put a phaser (cheap as chips will be fine) on it (b4 or after)

26 knobs ... 9 switches ... 2 foot switches ... 2 led's ... 0 labels. I like to tweak here and there, but once you get everything setup on this thing the gig will be over.

He meant DHA. I think the HP one is discontinued, there's a VT1, a VT1 Mk3, or various dual tube VT2 ones. If you want heavy distortion, go for a VT2 or VT1 Mk3, the standard VT1 is more of a light overdrive. My VT2's being built right now, I'll post some clips up eventually!

You are correct, we have not made a VT1-HP in over two years. A VT2 will be needed for really heavy distortion, the VT2-Dual and VT2-Dual-Custom are both dual channels were as the VT2-Fatguts is a single channel on or off effect.

Both the Tech 21 XXL for bass and the Gallien-krueger Diesel Dawg are supposed to be really good for heavy distortion as opposed to overdrive or fuzz. And they're cheaper than some of the other options.

I used to use the distortion channel on my GK 2001RB (same circuit as the diesel dawg) and thought it sounded great, probably far more brutal than I should have been playing with my indie rock band... The diesel dawg has an added mid control as well. I haven't tried the tech 21 XXL, but i know a lot of people like it for distortion.

have you ever been to a show in japan?

this box would be an engineering marvel if it worked.
but i'm not sure it would without having a sucker-path.

conceptually it's cool. but you need a roadmap, five pages of directions for 'your tone'.

but, suffice to say, no one can copy you.

The Turbo Rat makes for a pretty nasty distortion... I've got one, and it can be fun at times. I mainly use it for recording though.
