KMA Machines Tyler Deluxe

This unit offers more possibilities than I can imagine.I got mine a few months ago and I'm still working on mastering it. I'm not the most technically gifted guy but I'm always trying to find out good combinations for cool bass sounds and I'm sure I still have only scratched it's surface.
Any users out there that might offer some thoughts or tips on this mighty machine?
 
I picked a non deluxe "Frequency splitter" version up several months ago to try to utilize the HPF/LPF stuff to tighten up my sound mainly since people rave about HPF for that sort of thing, as well as put an overdrive in the HPF side. I could never get anything dialed in the sounded good to me. Maybe I wasn't dialing both sides in right, or maybe it has something to do with being tuned down to C Standard? Hopefully someone with some real experience can chime in as well. None of the Youtube vids I've seen really help much either.

I hear that.The videos I've seen aren't much help either.I've heard some good sounds particularly Patrick Hunter's.The manual lists the functions fine but I'm struggling with my signal path.At the moment my high pass side doesn't seem to work,some pedals like Pickle Pie Hella Fuzz is crushingly loud while my Subdecay M3 synth doesn't "synth".Same with my Flashback delay.I'm going to take the board apart and start from scratch again.I'm admittedly a techno -boob which surely doesn't help things but the Tyler Deluxe for sure has great potential so I won't give in.Once I nail it I'll share the knowledge,but hopefully you figure it out first and fill me in.

I'm pretty sure the filter in the Tyler comes before each loop, so you are cutting bass from the signal feeding pedals in the HPF loop which would make some types of effects respond much different (in particular anything that tracks notes and any sort of gain pedals). Also if you use a clean blend on the pedals in the loop you are just blending in high-passed signal which could sound strange with delays

Assuming you are using both the LPF and HPF sides, the Tyler wouldn't really be ideal as a static HPF as you are still rolling in those lows with the other loop. An HPF is usually used as a fixed filter in the sub frequencies that cuts out stuff your cab can't really efficiently reproduce anyway- you would need to only use the HPF loop to get this effect, and the Tyler's filter cutoff slopes might be shallow to do that well anyway. If you are tuning to C standard you'd be cutting out fundamental frequencies of your lowest notes unless you set the filter in the 30s (your cabs may or may not really go that low- most bass cabs don't reproduce much in that area)
 
If you are using anything high gain on the high pass side, I recommend putting a compressor on the low pass side. It helps to keep the dynamics consistent on both sides. If you aren't getting enough signal on the high pass side to properly use the pedals there, turn down the high pass filter. And remember to try switching the phase if it sounds thin with certain pedals. I used to use the original KMA Tyler and it worked well for me with a Hyper Luminal on the low side, and a variety of drives and modulations on the high side. Digital pedals can be a pain with parallel paths due to the latency they introduce. I stopped doing analog signal splitting when I started using digital pedals.

I've attached a photo of my board from about 2 years ago. The entire bottom row was in the high pass side, with just the Hyper Luminal on the low pass. It was also the last time I had a fully analog signal chain :D

Hmmm. That's actually probably it. I was running signal to the Input, Over drive in the HPF loop and then back to the HPF return and out the pedal Send. So the LPF was in the mix as well. Maybe I'll try going Pedal Input, HPF send OD pedal and then on to the amp. Skip the LPF side all together since you can't disengage the filters, just the loops. Thanks for the thought! If that works better I might move on to dedicated HPF instead.

As I mentioned above, the filter slope of the Tyler might be too shallow to really attenuate subs substantially without also rolling off useful bass. The HPF I use has a 24db/octave filter slope in the subs that makes it possible to cut sub-octave rumble without cutting into the actual bass range much.
Your TL606 with EV15L boxes start rolling off in response in the upper bass/lower midrange and too much sub info will likely make them fart out (though your particular amp probably isn't pushing a pair of them too hard)- those speakers are more optimal for guitar use (though they have a great midrange response for bass, I've blown a few in bass cabs!). The Rusty Box also has a fairly tight low end already in my experience, so you may be benefitting from some high-passing already if you have that engaged. I would otherwise say that your setup probably could benefit from a dedicated HPF since you are using a very low tuning into a relatively low-power head into speakers that aren't particularly sub-friendly by today's standards. An ideal HPF in this rig isn't something you will hear all that much, it will just improve the efficiency of the system and potentially clean up the speaker response as sub frequencies require alot of power to reproduce and your speakers can't efficiently project it anyway.

This is probably a good point. The Tyler is only a 12db rolloff. I just wasn't sure how much difference 12 vs 24 would make. Maybe more than I expected.

Though I'm curious what HPF you use that is 24db? The Broughton ones I see everyone raving about are all 12db as well.

I use the FDeck type 3. It has a fixed 12db filter at 35hz (IIRC) plus a second moveable 12db filter that can go well up into the low midrange. This effectively makes for a 24dB/octave roll off below 35hz. I will often set the moveable filter up around 90-100hz as I often play through a low-wattage tube amp and a sealed cabinet that probably has a similar roll-off point in the low end as your EV15Ls do. This gives me an overall tighter sound and a bit more clean headroom from my amplifier, and I can boost the bass a bit on my amp and the HPF makes the bass control on my amp act more like an upper-bass/low-mid boost control.

As far as I can remember from college signal processing days, there are significant barriers (as in, laws of physics) to building a proper 24db/oct pedal in the analog world. Digital in your DAW is possible and that's often what production uses. Hence the common 12db in pedals. What FDeck does may not quite work the way you describe, but I'm not qualified to understand or explain this anymore, gone digital professionally for the past 20 years :) Maybe someone else can drop some education on us.

I can’t verify with certainty as I haven’t graphed the response (though I could do it if I think of it later and have time), but just going by the way he describes it in his website: hpftechllc - HPF-Pre, updated December 15, 2019 (scroll down and it describes the filter addition in #4 of a list of points). Perhaps @fdeck can chime in as well. I can say that I used to use one of his basic 12db/octave filters before the series 3 was released and that the difference was quite noticeable to me particularly through a naturally fairly tubby amp/cab combo (Mesa Walkabout Scout 15 with passive radiator design).
