FWIW, I'd feel a little foolish carrying around a $600 EDC folder. Especially when I know it won't do any better of a job than something cheaper.

I don't have that kind of hang-up with fixed blades, though. I'll pay $4-600 for a Randall or a Behring all day long.

I managed to find all of my pocket knives and round them up.

And then I managed to find every other knife in my house and round them up.

Leatherman on me and in every bag and car, and a Kershaw Speed Assist for the quick cuts.

You would go nuts living in my area. I drive by Kershaw/Shun, Gerber and Benchmade factories almost daily with Leatherman on occasion. There are more knife manufacturers that I can not think of around here. Once a year most of them open their doors to the public with sales of one off custom orders that did not go through, prototypes and return/refurbished. My Brother has a large collection of Leatherman prototypes.

Yeah, I do; but not Benchmade. With that one, you're paying for the Damascus blade and titanium. I have a bunch of knives that cost that, or more. Hand forged Damascus steel, and mammoth ivory scales will always set you back a bunch of $$. Randall and EK combat knives ain't exactly cheap, either. Neither are Wilkinson Sword Fairbairn-Sykes Commando knives... Knives are like anything else; you generally get what you pay for. And, nobody who makes hand made knives works for minimum wage...;)

I had a little Swiss army keychain that got a lot of use for opening freezie pops and packages and stuff, but forgot to unclip it from my keys on the way back from Disney World and it was confiscated. To add insult to injury, they also swabbed my ukulele. I still unconsciously reach for my keys every time I need to sever a ziptie or unbox a goodie from the mail and it saddens me.

Outside of the realm of the immediately office-functional, I'm pretty averse to blades and don't much like to be near them- I have a balisong but the blade isn't sharp and also is a comb, which is pretty pointless because a metal comb serves very little purpose besides frizzing up your hair, but I can twirl it without cutting myself and that's nice.

Aha! my kind of thread! (On my astronomy forum we had a nice knife thread going but some of the thin-skinned perpetually-offended amongst them got the mods to shut it down as they were appalled anybody would want to carry a 'deadly weapon'. I tried to explain that I've carried a knife in my pocket for over 45 years and NEVER once used it as a weapon, but always as a tool. But once those kind of folks have their mind up that they're offended there's no changing their minds)

Anyway, not really a collector per se, but I do have a modest collection of about 25 folders and 10 fixed blades. And a set of swords and a machete.

My most expensive one is a Proelia, about $100, but although it is a great knife, for some reason I don't feel comfortable carrying it around as an EDC. I also have a CRKT that was about $75, and that was my EDC for about 10 years. Don't know why I feel differently about the Proelia.

My latest is a Meyerco Mossberg Tactical that is very similar to the Proelia, but only costs about $15. G-10 handles and an assisted open, it really covers the bases for what I need/want in an EDC.

But I buy knives like my wife buys shoes so next month I might see something else I have to have!
