Yes, I am not wearing anything out either!
I don't shy away from 154CM/ATS34 class steels because the only area they really have been slightly surpassed in is their edge holding ability. Supersteels are generally no tougher or more corrosion resistant than the previous "best" steels.
As someone who loves to sharpen (especially on natural stones, which I find romantic) having to sharpen a little more often is an advantage! Give me a good blade and about three or four good stones and strops, and I am at peace!

A couple of new work knives. The Fox Core on top has a 3" Elmax blade, a formidable 0.15" thick. I will use this one, for two reasons. First, it feels very good in the hand; lightweight, comfortable, and tight.
Second, I need to dull the excellent factory edge, so I can finally get to sharpen some Elmax! I have heard a few stories.

N690 steel is acceptable in a knife this size, by which I mean just small enough to fit in the watch pocket of your jeans. It does not get in the way when carried there, so you can get in and out of your pocket without struggling or scraping your hand. A very practical, almost straight 2.25" blade and a bright yellow G-10 handle. It is big enough to get a firm 2.5 or 3 finger grip, and strong enough to cut the crap!
Strong, cheap, and bright. There are a million punch lines going through my head right now, but I will will resist the base impulses.
It is a cool little knife for $30!

I check this thread now and then and always find it interesting. It sparks an interest in me to buy a knife, but by the time I get to the shopping cart online to pay for it I'm usually asking myself 'why are you buying a knife? What are you going to use it for?' I remove the knife from my cart and forget about it until I see this thread again.
I'm curious for y'all who carry a knife with you regularly. What needs come up during the day that make you glad you've got a knife in your pocket?

There's been a few times I'm at a specialty restaurant (like at a Japanese restaurant, the Renaissance Fair or Medieval Times) where they don't provide a knife. I'm happy that I brought one. Or when I need to open a box of any kind - my fingernails have become extremely weak as I've aged, and cardboard will break them - I use a knife to open boxes of all types. If I buy an item that is packaged in a plastic clamshell and I want to open it right away. Or to cut anything, anywhere, any time. I don't use it often, but I'm glad I have it when it's needed.
I EDC a Compact Swiss Army Knife and a custom Laconico EZC. I use the SAK less frequently than the Laconico but when I do it’s sometimes to lift a cap or uncork a wine bottle. Then, it’s essential.
Because I’m a retired chef I own, and use, a lot of fixed blade kitchen knives. Others I have perform bushcraft tasks. Field dressing and skinning furred game are two. Gutting birds is another. The Laconico excels at the latter, and opens boxes too.

I COULD carry a simple old school band/case razor. I'm popping packing tape and lighter weight straps many many times throught my day. I carry my microtech (bronze/brown OTF in my picture a few posts above) for two reasons.
1. Well I'm a child of 51 and it's a cool knife.
2. One hand it's out, tape is cut and its closed and back in my pocket in about 1.58329 seconds. This is very handy in tight spaces like my walk in deep freezer. I can be supporting a box with my other hand. I won't stab myself in the leg trying to close it (lol) or set it down where it can fall into a tough place to get it back...
The other microtech, the orange one in the same Pic, is really thin, it stays clipped to my seat belt at the base. It's glass breaker is substantial, it's frigging bright orange, and it's very sharp. Again, single hand operation.

I carry a pocket knife and use it daily for the same reasons already mentioned - opening boxes & packages, cutting and trimming of things where scissors won’t do, as well as other reasons. There’s also an aesthetic appeal to me from an industrial art perspective. Function + form.
Here’s my Benchmade Mangus, a Marlowe design, now discontinued. This has pure aesthetic appeal to me. I will never carry this knife though.

Most knives will do what you need. Choosing specific ones, especially expensive ones, is a luxury.
That $2 keyring folder at the register will actually do for the majority of my needs. I just LIKE having the fun in-out flicker.
Mainly opening packages. But I carry a Swiss Army Knife and the screwdrivers come in handy for tightening screws and to pry open things.
I wouldn't say I use it every day, but I do use it multiple times a week. And the SAK is light enough I don't really notice it.
My other EDC is a small flashlight which I do use almost every day. My eyes aren't what they used to be and I need more light to see or read things.

I ask myself the same question, every time I get ready to order another one. I've got 47 folders, and another dozen fixed blades. Some people buy shoes, guitars/basses, tools, etc. My thing is knives.
I've had a knife in my pocket since I was 9 yrs old, growing up in the wilds of semi-rural Pennsylvania.
I consider it a tool, as not once in the past 52 years have I ever employed it as a weapon, offensively or defensively.
As others have mentioned, opening packages/boxes, usual knife stuff. But the most common task is slicing fruit or cutting a sandwich, sub, or burrito in half. Plus it's my fidget item, flicking them open and closed, running them through the sharpener/honer whether it needs it or not.
I grew up on a farm here in colorado. My dad carried and used a knife everyday and so do I. Been doing remodeling and building most of my life. Have used it a couple of times defensively. Never cut anyone, just brandishing it scared off muggers. My kids carry knives and I have given a few out to female family members and friends teaching them knife safety. Having one on a key ring can be invaluable IMO.
Were I to ever need it for defense I'm more likely to employ the glass breaker than the blade, TBH. I sure hope I never "need" anything for defense... specifically needing something so close quarters as a blade.

Civivi Spiny Dogfish in natural G10. It’s funky. The compound grind blade is very interesting though.
