Korg pitchblack tuner

flat tuning function not equals ability to recognize sharp/flat notes.

Marill, I think what you are referring to as "flat tuning" is not what we here in the United States refer to as flat tuning. Western music uses the 12-tone equal-temperament scale to define the frequency increment from one note to the next. Using a tuner calibrated to those increments results in what we here call "flat tuning": one semitone down = A#, D#, G#, C#, F#, where the open B string is tuned to a true A#, the open E string is tuned to a true D#, etc.

Korg's web site explains that the Pitchblack+ "also lets you create up to five custom tuning programs of your own with any temperament you specify. This is ideal for accommodating special tunings such as ethnic instruments and stretched tuning."

Much non-Western music uses these different temperaments, rather than our "standard" 12-tone equal-temperament scale. Seeing as how you're in Singapore, that's probably what you're talking about: alternate temperaments. In that case, it is indeed true that the Korg Pitchblack is not capable of adapting to these alternate tunings, but the Korg Pitchblack+ is capable.

But to us here in the United States, the Korg pitchblack (and all chromatic tuners) are capable of accommodating what we call "flat tuning".

the "flat tuning" wasn't my definition, merely Korg's own definition in the manual. And I'm referring specifically to this function on the DT-10 tuner.

and I'm saying that this function that is in the DT-10 isn't available on the pitchblack, only the pitchblack+ and the DT-10.

You can always do the same on any chromatic tuner including DT-10 and pitchblack, but this specific function as described below.... is not on the pitchblack, but on the DT-10 and pitchblack+.

that's all i'm saying :) did not expect to have the point being brought up again and again in this thread :)

■ Specifying a flat tuning
You can specify a dropped tuning in the range of one flat (semitone) to
seven flats (a fifth) lower than standard tuning.
With the factory settings, this is set to 0: off (standard tuning).

1 Press the FLAT key.
The current setting will appear for several seconds in the note display.

2 While the setting is shown in the display, press the FLAT key to
set the flat tuning.
Each time you press the key you will cycle through the following
settings.

0: off (standard tuning) 4: four flats (major third lower)
1: one flat (semitone lower) 5: five flats (perfect fourth lower)
2: two flats (whole tone lower) 6: six flats (tritone lower)
3: three flats (minor third lower) 7: seven flats (perfect fifth lower)

When you have made the desired setting, wait approximately two
seconds without pressing the key.

The indication in the note display will blink two times, and the flat
tune setting will be completed. You will then return to tuning mode.
If a flat tuning has been specified, the FLAT mode LED above the note
display will light.

When tuning, the note display will show a note name that is higher
than the actually-input pitch by the flat tuning setting. (For example if
you have specified a flat tuning of 1, the display will indicate “A#”
when you input an “A” pitch.)
 
OK, Marill, now I understand what you're saying.

The function you just quoted is just a bandaid for people who can't keep track of how flat they are tuning. It has nothing to do with temperament or oriental tunings.

The last sentence (in parentheses) describes it perfectly. With a Pitchblack, you have to remember the name of the real note you're trying to tune to. With a Pitchblack+ or DT-10 the tuner will lie to you and tell you you're tuning to an A (for example) when the real note you're tuning to in "one flat tuning" is a G#/Ab.

Your so-called "flat tuning" is just a function where the tuner renames the notes to what they would be (on your fretboard) if you WEREN'T tuning down a semitone, or two semitones, or whatever.

And like others have said, so what? Anyone who's tuning down (what you and Korg call "flat tuning") just has to know that E minus one semitone = D#, A minus two semitones = G, etc. No big deal, and the so-called "flat tuning" function adds no value except maybe for very inexperienced beginners, IMHO.
 
geez, what a tough crowd.

firstly, flat-tuning is not my term, it's how korg refer to the function they put into the DT-10.

secondly, I'm just saying i use that function and noting that it is absent in the pitchblack, and now i'm being implied as a very inexperienced beginner.
 
I'm trying to decide between the pitchblack and the pitchblack+.

Here are the differences as I understand them:
* Bigger/nicer tuning display
* Flat tuning
* Better accuracy (+-0.1 cents vs. +-1 cent)
* Dual inputs for multiple instruments/tunings.
* Custom tuning presets

Is that accurate? How much nicer is the display on the plus? It looks easier to read. Also, the better accuracy seems nice, but 0.1 cents seems a bit overkill...

Does anybody see any real reason to get the plus?

My old, cheap Sabine tuner lets you scroll between 437, 438, 439, 440, 441 and 442, so I figured it was something similar to that. I had a DOD Bass 30 multi that did the same (flat tuning) thing as the Korg Pitchblack+.

Flat tuning is not tuning to A 442 or whatever. It just renames the notes so that if you tune down, you can still see the names E/A/D/G in the display. Seems nice but as mentioned before, no big deal.

I'm considering getting myself one of these.
It looks much better than the Boss TU-2, mostly because of its true-bypass. It also has a 'power out' so you don't need another power supply :hyper:
I wanted to ask the guys who already own it:
a) Is it really true-bypass? did you perform some kind of a/b test with the signal coming out of the pitchblack (when off) and the 'direct' sound?
b) Do anyone tried connecting two bass guitars into the Pitchblack+'s two inputs? Does it perform a 'mix' of the two basses at the output, or somehow selects one of them (like an a/b box) ?
