KSD jazz basses?

I have a bass in at a local shop for repair and while I was waiting, I played a KSD jazz bass (4 string) for a bit. I was shocked. Nicely figured and joined ash body, maple neck/fb with a GREAT fret job and pearloid looking blocks, and a 2 band active pre that I didn't mind at all (I just don't like the tone of active pre's), and it played and sounded great. At $600 out the door, why don't I hear more about these?

I've got a KSD 705-J that's become my main gigging bass. The weight can be an issue on a long set, and the 35" scale takes some getting used to, but I think it's an awesome bass for the price. I got mine used for $500 and have since added a brass nut, a bridge pickup cover and shielded it...nails the '70's J-bass sound cold and looks great.

Beware of the fact the you will have to search to find a gig bag or case to fit it. The headstock is long and with the 35" scale it won't fit in most gig bags.

I did not have a problem with mine but I am a solid dude and I loved the tone. I agree it would sound real good with a J-retro or an Audere but the pre that is in there can achieve some good tones.
I think they are one of the best buys in jazz basses for under a grand. I am looking to grab a used one in the near future. The only reason I got rid of mine was to trade it for a MTD Heir that had more of a modern tone. There is nothing like a good jazz though.

Strange, the one here locally (at Midwest Music) didn't feel any heavier than my MIM Jazz Bass. Are the alder sunburst ones any lighter?

I guess given the popularity and high prices of Lakland Skyline JO's (which I've owned), I'm just surprised I haven't seen these more often...

+1 The Alder models are lighter and have 60's pickup placement from what I remember.... they are meant to replicate a 60's J bass in tone and feel.

The Ash version has the 70's pickup placement and is meant to replicate the Marcus Miller style modified late 70's J Bass. Unfortunately, part of that aggressive, grindy and huge low end tone comes from a full size, full weight ash body. The Atelier's and Celinder Updates are also quite heavy, but that's the price to pay for that particular tone.

I've played a few KSD's, and would agree that they are pretty nice for the price.
