KSD v70j 5 string Mini Review

Lakland Skyline Darryl Jones 5 and Joe Osborne 5 > KSD

Nothing against the KSD. The KSD's I've seen look nice and the price on them seems right. I'd be very curious to play one for a while. However, I can't imagine liking ANY jazz clone any more than I like the Laklands.

Actually, a new Fender Deluxe Jazz 5 with an ash body and maple board will run you about $1250-1350, depending on where you buy it, so the KSD with the same features is in a pretty different price range-about a $500 difference.

Plus, the Fender American Deluxe can't operate in passive mode, which is a deal breaker for me. Sold an otherwise great '99 Am. Dlx. Precision largely because of this.

Yeah, I get the same feeling. Particularly when reading the line "how can you describe possibly the best jazz bass ever?" Heath, after seeing about a thousand posts about how your Kubicki was the best bass ever (your words) and then seeing you sell it less than 15 months later sorta limits your credibility.
What if he sold the Kubicki for a damn good price ? I mean I had a MTD 635(not trying to drift away from the subject of the KSD jazz bass)that I thought I was going to keep for awhile, even though I wasn't crazy about its thin tone,I thought it was a keeper, but a local guy here like it,and started to talk the numbers that I like to hear.........Goodbye MTD 635.

He didn't. He traded it for the KSD jazz-while he may love his new bass, and it's always a good trade if you trade your bass in for one you like more, value-wise he didn't get a great deal. He traded his Kubicki, which was probably worth at least $1100+ US considering it's history for the used KSD with nicks on it that would have been $800 if it was brand new. He had the bass shipped to him in Australia for free, but he also had to pay $165 in customs fees to get it.

hey im happy with the deal, very happy, the kubicki was great, just wasnt fitting in so to say......anyway..i dont really care what ya's think, its my bass, suits me, its sexy, great jazz bass tone, 70's jazz stylin...its all about tone and feel to me.....who gives a toss about where its made on the name on the headstock..look at brian may, him and his dad made his own guitar and his tone is considered one of the best

I'm not one to ordinarily stick up for Heath :) , but in this situation I think a lot of people are being unfair. When you consider the deal he got, you have to factor in that it would have been next to impossible for him to sell that bass in Australia. The market for a bahama (puke) green X factor 4 string in Australia would be next to nil. It may have taken him 12 months to move it and even then he may have taken a pounding on the price.

If he put it in a shop at consignment it would have possibly moved faster but he would have lost about 25% of the sale price to the shop.

Therefore if he wanted to get cash value instantly for it he had to trade it and covering shipping both ways can be a big deal (a bass in a case to or from Australia is about $200USD) so the total shipping cost alone could have been as high as $400USD.

Basically a bass worth $600+400 worth of shipping $1000USD (about $1300Aus) which is about all he would have got for the Kubicki if he had sold it here, plus he may have had to wait 12 months to sell the thing.

So please, stop hassling him about the deal because there are other factors beyond just price when you live in Australia.

BTW Bryan thats not directed just at you (other people have been commenting on it).

My comments were directed at hands5's post that the Kubicki might have only been sold because he made a big profit selling it-my response was merely to tell him that that's not why he sold it-that he was actually losing money in the deal in order to get the bass he wanted, so it wasn't all about the money. hands5's post was in response to my saying that Heath's opinions on his basses may be skewed as proven by his selling of the Bahama-mama after only 15 months of owning it despite hundreds of posts on how perfect it was. I didn't mean to bring up the deal thing for any other reason than to show that profit wasn't the primary interest behind selling the Kubicki-it was getting the bass he wanted.

And as I said, it's always a good trade if you trade your bass in for one you like more. I sold a bass I paid $3200 for for $1850, but I was able to use that $1850 to buy a bass worth as much new as the one I sold, and I was happier with it, so to me it was a great deal- value-wise though, I lost a ton.

One thing I don't understand is the "shipping both ways" thing that's been mentioned-every trade I've made has involved each party paying for their own shipping-I've never heard of someone trading something that they had to pay both shares of shipping for. Is that common when you have to ship something into Australia?

I have never heard of it being done before, but from my dealings with Brian Barrett, he has been an absolutely honest and straight up guy. I'd hazzard a guess and say that he probably offered Heath the KSD+cash for the Kubicki (to get to its fair market value) and then they negotiated that cash difference into the shipping cost for Heath (ie KSD -=> Australia).

Its an interesting approach to what is otherwise a difficult problem.

Brian's been a great guy every time I've exchanged emails with him as well. Now that you own, what, 12 Marcus Miller jazzes, you could let Heath at one to compare similarly priced, similarly spec'd basses to see what he thinks.

Speaking of how long it takes to move a puke green Kubibki in Australia, it had been sitting in the shop Heath bought it from for 6 years. So many people borrowed/hired it for a night or whatever. It passed through so many hands. You think someone would have fallen in love with it at least once before Heath... alas no.

My issues were not whether he got a good deal or not. Someone said KSD's were the best value. Use of the word "best" is rarely justified, IMO. I have an online friend from Egypt who has an even harder time getting his hands on things. I can understand the pain. :hmm:

I know what it's like to get pumped up over a new instrument. I have felt that way numerous times. We all tend to say that we've found "the one" only to turn around after having founding something else that we would like to try... Myself included. I love and play Benaventes almost exclusively for over a year now. I'm also very familiar with Brian and the fact that he is an honest and stand-up guy. I'd have sone the same thing if I were in Heath's shoes, but then again, I wouldn't have bought that Kubicki in the first place... Just not me. :P But I don't go telling everybody, in every thread, asking about any bass, to go out and buy a Benavente... I can forsee LOTS of threads being littered with "buy-KSD's, their the best basses ever" in the place of the seemingly endless sea-foam green Stu Hamm Kubicki recommendations and toutings we've had the endure in the recent past... Eventhough the original poster is looking for a 6-string or something esle unrelated!

TB'er: Hey I'm looking to get into a good EUB, what do you recommend?
Heath: Buy a KSD. They RULE!

TB'er: Hey I'm looking for a used GT-7, what do you guys have out there?
Heath: Buy a KSD. They RULE!

TB'er: Hey I'm looking to get into a good high-end instrument, what do you recommend?
Heath: Buy a KSD. They RULE!

Rinse. Repeat cycle. :help:

And then the show your 5-strings, and show your bass, and show your amp threads where he doesn't show the amp, he'll show the KSD! Heath, I'll give you this... You're relentless! :ninja:

:rollno: :D :bassist:
