Kubicki preamp problem

i have a 94 fender jazz baa plus v. With a 9v Kubicki preamp. I think the preamp is cutting in and out and sometimes it does not come on and sounds distorted, but if i slap the ares near the unit it comes on. Recently it is cutting out during a performance. Can Any one help?

Sounds like there's a short somewhere. Did you open the control cavity to have a look? Maybe if you post a pic, someone can spot the problem.

Without any photos or some diagnosis in the cavity we can only guess.
Worn battery clip maybe? You can try to fix it by tightening the clip terminals.
Or a broken solder joint?

I don’t remember what output jacks those have but, if it’s a barrel jack, that would be my guess. I have a friend with a Peavey that was doing more or less the same thing and, as soon as we replaced the barrel jack, it was fine. However, without more info, that’s just a guess.

does yours look like this? If so, I agree with @Matt Liebenau above, look at the barrel jack and all wire joins, a battery change could easily undo something in an old instrument.

This definitely sounds more like a bad connection and not something deeper in the preamp board itself. The battery clip and barrel jack are definitely the weakest links in this setup, so that is where I'd start with the diagnosis.

Thanks for the heads up. Just received new barrel jack and will try that first.
