Kustom 2 x 15

Back in the day I had a friend who had a Kustom 2x15. I used to borrow it occasionally and pair it with my Dual Showman head. He got tired of lugging it around and he cut it into two 1x15 cabs. I bought one of the 1x15s from him and used it for a while. I can’t even remember what I did with it. That was 40+ years ago.

I had an Ampeg B25 with a Showman head. Band decided to get Kustoms. I had a white hard with one red one and blue 2x15 cab.
Played a gig at Emergency in Georgetown with the Ampeg sideways on top of the two 2x15s. The Kustom powered the two Kustom cabs, a Traynor YBA1A powered the Ampeg. Whole rig sounded great but you know the great sound was the Ampeg/Traynor.
Now I’m going sacrilegious. In those days many bassists would get a Mountain/GrandFunk distortion sound from JBLs. I didn’t prefer it so specifically had the CTSs. The trick was the Kustom head could get real transitory sounding before 1/2 way up. In those days B-15s and Showman were common so experience with tube clarity and warmth was common. I love Sunns to this day and find some of that in Moniques. Anyway a huge sonic improvement in a Kustom was to use tube amplification.
A Sunn 2000s was altogether a pro and expensive set of kit in those days. Ampeg didn’t promote 2x15s though there were in their lineup. There were those 2x15 Portaflex and similar Oliver models. But Sunn ruled in this configuration.
But yeah Kustom cabs could be more than suitable.
It’s so funny talking about this stuff that was just our regular kit. I was playing an EBO with the single black bucker or an actual ‘57 P with gold pickguard maple neck that was just a used bass I bought for $150. It was 1969.:)

I know the factory handles are a little over 6" long.
I was thinking two of those leather handles, advertised on Amazon .
The casters are a different story.. replace them or use a hand truck?
Just picked this up ,to living things up..

In terms of swapping in modern eminence speakers, I have had great experiences using legend 15s in cabs that work well with D-140s. The JBLs have a slightly brighter top end and a bit more “woody” low mids but are too fragile for gigging now that recones cost (much) more than $100!
