Kustom / Kasino et als / Budd Ross has died.

My friends and I used to drool over the amps in the big 1968 Kolor Katalog (the one with all the little Naugas in it), but we never could afford one. The local music store always had a couple near the door, and I loved switching them on to hear the "thump" sound. The organ in the catalog always intrigued me, and I managed to score one many years ago - it's gold - beautiful! (you can actually see the top of it in my avatar, under that cheap Casio). I also have a gold 2x10 combo amp and a black 1x12 combo. Their stuff was built like a tank, and there's still lots of them around today, often at pretty good prices.
When I was about 10, and wanted to have long hair and be a rock musician, my dad was always concerned about my hearing. We saw a band once with a Kustom backline, and I remember he told me the padding on the sides of the amps was to absorb the sound and protect their ears. I think I believed that for a while. I should have told him "well, ok, let me get a Kustom so my ears will be safe!"

Sadly we old farts are of an age where our peers are beginning to fail. The icons of the Rock and Roll age are disappearing faster as the years go by. All that's left for us to do is to wish them a peaceful ending and to be grateful for what they left behind.
As always, there are things that are musical milestones in our lives. One memorable milestone in mine is the first time I went to a club and saw a band entirely equipped with tall, tuck and roll, blue sparkle Kustom rigs. Oooh, mommy!
Never owned one of his amps, but I still have and use my Ross Distortion (brown), Flanger (red), and Compressor (gray) pedals.

This is from probably around 1967. Our band had all Kustom gear. Notice the Kustom guitar. Sorry the pic was not in color. My bass amp was blue.
Kustom P.A. cabinets made great seats for the back of an Econoline van.
1970 I saw Guess Who for their American Woman tour. Whole backlind was Kustoms
Ironically Pink Floyd Was was up. No idea what they used but it was in Quadrophonic First time I eve saw a support band return after headliner left
I digress. Probably never get rid of my 70 or 71 K200B. Used to drool over Kustom Katalog and felt like a rock star when my parents bought mine

IMHO, as extensive as his accomplishments were, his legacy is very easy to sum up in a few words: When the thought "bass amp" pops into my mind in a general context, the first image in my head that accompanies it is a Tuck & Roll rig...

Played through a few Kustoms as supplied backline in the '70's. I liked them them. I had forgotten about the turn on thump until this thread.
I too can remember being in awe of those fancy T & R amps.
I also remember riding to some friends gigs on top of them.
Definately the winner of the 'most comfortable gear' award.
