L-2500 pick-up replacement.

I have a G&L L-2500; nice bass, but the tone is not so great.

Any ideas for replacing the pickups?

Any pickups that easily fit into a G&L L-2500.

The point is, there are hundreds of different kinds of pickups. Going about blindly is sort of like asking what car to buy, without considering whether you want an SUV, or a pickup truck, or a sedan, etc. If you want a monster truck, what good will recommendations for a mini van be?

I put EMG Hz's (35 size) in my L2500 Tribute. They sound good to me, but I have no idea what sounds good to you so I can't, in good faith, recommend them to you.

Be that as it may, you still need to figure out what you are looking for. Or just go with EMG HZ pickups, like domdec314 suggested.

One of G&L fortes is their MFD pickups. Honestly, there are a lot of replacement choices out there. Perhaps your best option is selling your L2500 and getting either a M2500 (if you like everything else about G&Ls), or look at other brands of basses entirely.

G&L are great basses, and most folks that own them love the factory pickups. If you like the bass, my suggestion would be to start somewhere else to improve the tone rather than replacing the MFDs, which are great sounding pickups.

Review exactly how the knobs and switches work, and get a clear understanding of what each setting does.

Quick list:

• Replace strings and battery, and a professional set-up
• Zero out your amp tone controls, and reset gain structure
• disconnect any effects between your bass and your amp
• You may want to lower your pickups a touch

One final point, in the event you pull the factory pickups out, you will probably need to install completely new electronics and wiring harness as well. Also plan on never selling the bass, because no one will want a G&L with replacement electronics and pickups.

The L2500 is generally considered a very good sounding bass.
IMO there is something wrong - my first guess is that you're not dialing it in right. Every bass is different in that respect. What other basses have you played that you liked?

Ok, well the the global music industry is generally considered to be commercial rubbish so what most people think is probably not a good benchmark.

I'll change the pickups rather than buy the same bass with different pickups
