Lakland 44-01

I have one in natural ash. Fantastic bass ! Mine is wearing GHS precision flats, and has a huge range of tones that can coaxed out with changes in EQ.
Easily holds it own against any MIA Fender I've played. (IMHO, IME, YMMV, etc)

I had one that was new in 2005. I loved it. Terrific ash body and dark dark rosewood fingerboard. I think that Lakland quality in the 44-01 and 55-01 series pretty much equals Fender recent MIA basses—and that they are a better value in that you pay less for the quality. I think they are plek'd, no? They are 34" scale.
Resale value will be less than MIA Fenders, but so are the prices. About tones, I used mine on a live radio/TV music show quite a bit. It was studio worthy. I found I could get anything that was asked for. It was Bartolini pickup equipped, though I have forgotten what the preamp was. No noise. You can get very clean and punchy, elegantly crunchy, deeply chocolatey, slap, R&B friendly, mid-rich, etc.
The only thing I would say is that if you get a 44-01, sooner or later you will want a 55-01.
I later sold my 44-01 to a friend who was taking bass lessons with me. I still miss it. Here is a pic that came from the Bass Emporium ad that caused me to buy it mail order. This pic is that actual instrument I owned.

I own a 2007 44-01 natural (ash) with maple neck. Its lightweight, the bartolini MK-1 pickups sound fantastic, and Lakland's have an incredible amount of tone and/or variations. I won mine on Ebay for $6hundo and can't complain one bit...its a win win!

hey jim, it seems that you know your old 44-01 pretty well. i can't find anyone who's played aggressive tapping or chord strumming on one, though. that's the bulk of what i'd use it for. i was using a fender jazz for that music before, but now the fender is set up solely for a different band.
do you think the lakland 44-01 could step in and take the reigns? i have a line on a decent trade for one at the moment.

ha. skyline. i'm getting rid of an ibanez koa atk 750, and the skyline is in my immediate price range.
