Hi. I'm back in the fold. My question is, and sorry if it's already been done, but how much of a difference is there between a USA and a Skyline? I know how they are made and such, but is a USA Lakland worth that much more than a Skyline? As far as playability and sound goes. I only have the 55-02 right now, but down the road, I'm looking to get a USA model. Just curious on any input.

This is an interesting question as I am ready to dive into the US Lakie realm this week. To be honest, I am preparing myself to be let down, and I say that not becasue of how poor I think the US will be, but on the opposite side..I am surprised how much bass you get for the price when you get a skyline.

I will have a US JO this week and I will be able to report back. All my skylines have played amazing. Let's see how the US stack-up.

To me, the big diference are the necks. I can't tell you specs, but the US models feel better to my left hand. The US necks are consistent with feel, depends on the model. I was thinking about getting another 5502 before I ordered my US. I just didn't find one I liked. I will say this, after playing an US model and trying to go back to a Skyline, I will have to go for broke and alway try to afford an US model. This is just my opinion....not trying to step on anyone toe's. Peace!

Nah, it's all good. I have read the difference before, I was just wondering more on opinions. I am perfectly happy with my 55-02, but like stated I do want a US model eventually. And by the time I have the funds for it, I will know if I want to stay with the 5 string or drop back to 4. I love the 55-02, but after a 3-4 hour gig even with breaks, it wears you down. And I have neck problems from an accident in the first place. But, Lakland drug me in and they will be my main bass no matter what.

Maybe you can get a 34" scale when the time is right. That's what i'm ordering. I like 34's over 35's.

What might be my second Lakland 5-er for similar feel in a different flavor (preferably still active pre)?

I think you should go with a a p bass, but doesn't have an active pre.

Zippy, it's been a while! Glad you're digging the 55-02. I gotta agree with Gordon, I think the LOG Bass is the way to go. This is a great deal right now, too, IMHO.

I'm afraid that is incorrect

body wood: US - swamp ash, Skyline - ash (no "swamp"), thick maple top vs. thin veneer on Deluxe. Alder available on US, unavailable on Skylines (so far).
Neck wood: quartersawn rock maple on US, flatsawn maple (no "rock") on Skylines.
fretboard wood: east-indian rosewood on US, non-specified rosewood on Skyline. Birdseye maple on US, maple on Skyline. Also, the ebony kind used on US models is not specified, but there is no ebony listed on the site for Skylines. I can't recollect if there are ebony Skyline boards out there at all.

Unless recently removed form the lineup, Ebony Lined Fretless (ELF) is an option for 4 and 5 string Skyline models. Note, you cannot get straight out unlined as that option has not been listed for Skyline models.

I personally found out that between 5594 and 5502 are very diffrent both in tonally and playability, 5594 is better, you bet.. But I don't think 5594 are 3 times better compare to 5502.

I am lucky to own 5594 D, cherryburst, rosewood FB..killer bass

Number, please! I just traded my trusty L2000 for this very sweet 44-02 Deluxe from Dan in FL!

There's something of an amusing story to be had here. When I was first contacted by this 44-02's previous owner Dan (whose TB handle is Lakin757), I was stunned. Obviously, I was talking with Dan Lakin, one of Lakeland's founders!! I was a bit confused why he might want to trade a 44-02 for a G&L but hey, we all like a little variety in life, right? (This was before I learned that Mr. Lakin had recently sold the company!) Anyway, in my next PM I go on and on about how much I'd always wanted to own one of his basses based on their excellent reputation, yada yada. I'm sure Dan must've given pause to the idea of doing the trade as he was obviously dealing with an idiot/crackpot. In the end we shared a good laugh - it turns out he was indeed NOT Lakeland's Dan Lakin and, in fact, his TB handle was entirely coincidental.

And as for my 55-94s, I told my daughter and my fiance that if they ever see me selling Traci and Sexual Chocolate... I'm done. I'll be quitting bass playing for good!

Just a question... Maybe it's a visual issue... Are Skyline DD/DJ/JoBo headstocks exactly like US are? I see a little difference in US shape, maybe more... I really don't know.

Hey Josep, there is a difference--the US headstocks are thicker. I believe they're exactly the same shape, though.

Zippy - welcome back!!! Maybe a 55-07 (55-02 with humbucking CHIs)? this has a significant different sound....or maybe (custom order) a 55-JJCS?

Or the LOG bass and have the retro pre-amp put in....
