Lakland Owners Group #58

wow! I miss a few days and we start a new thread! before I can wave on here, I have some "old" (part 57) biz to cover:
Evhest...OMG! that is one kool bass! love the color and the matching abalone blocks...that is going to be rockin!
as far as the BEM discussion: Carl tells me that nice BEM is extremely hard to come by these days and it is getting VERY expensive. he purchased a BEM slab that became the neck for my Cb550HH fretless (wow....what a mouth full!) and said it was the most epensive neck piece he has EVER purchased.
yes...it is "he who is lucky enough to purchase it" gets it these days....
as a side note, the boards for the first 100 or so Lakies were made out of FLOORING boards....Dan found a wood supplier who had some crazy BEM floor boards available and bought them ALL so he was the "king of the BEM wood" at that point in time.
nice figured wood is becoming an issue because of the lack of older trees etc.
as for Sadowosky bodies and necks I BELIEVE Lakland and Sadowsky both get them from the same supplier...the chambering is a main difference.
Gary: see? the CHIs are "very different".....nice to have 2 "j-style" basses ut each with their unique sound! congrats my friend!

Got the red wonder yesterday. It was freaky Friday with new toys as I also rigged up a completely new pedal board. I have never used pedals with the band but we are now often without our usual lead guitarist and the rhythm guy is our lead singer, who isn't gonna step out much with his axe, so.....mediocre bassist that I am, I have resorted to pedals to thicken the overall mix and "lively up myself".
Those Chis are amazing! And this is the 1st time I have ever bought a bass that weighs LESS than the dealer told me over the phone! It's a hair under 8.5 lbs (he said 8.8). I am a very happy camper! Still not sure about the color, although it is pretty juicy and very striking. It may grow on me. Not much birdseye on the neck/board, which is fine by me. Pics later today....

Regarding body weight, mentioned just a few posts back. When I ordered my 44-94, I did enquire about chambering and Leo let me know that Lakland does not do that, but added the request for a very light piece of ash in the order notes.
New to TB and trying to figure out this "number" thing. I have two Laklands currently, both Skylines. First is a 55-02 Deluxe in Cherryburst with maple fingerboard, second is a 55-64 limited edition with trans white over ash, maple board with pearl blocks and binding. Does that qualify me for a number? Do I need to post a photo, and if so, how is that done (or point me towards a FAQ for same)?

Here's what I'm talking about on my Decade. Incredible neck with no BEM except on the fretboard dots. Looks like true craftsman thought about it and made it. The wood grains are evenly spaced and very straight. That's not an accident. Anyone can cut a piece of birdseye with lots of eyes on it.
Also, isn't birdseye maple the result of a tree fungus? I don't remember where I heard that, but maybe that's why I'm not crazy about it. Just doesn't look as strong.
Regarding "straight grain" necks - That is a difference between Quarter sawn and Half sawn wood.
Half Sawn (plain/flat sawn)lumber has the growth rings of the tree parallel to the board's broad face.
Quarter sawn has the growth rings of the tree approximately perpendicular to the board's surface. Quarter sawn wood has the straightest grain, and is used for necks, fingerboards or anyplace where strength and stability is a must. It is much more expensive to use quarter sawn wood because you need bigger trees to get wood that will be appropriate.
Lakland Necks are Rock Maple but only US models use Quarter Sawn Wood.

There is definitely a difference but my 2011 US caught a solid dose of BEM
Regarding weight - all my past and current passive US 4 bangers and my Skyline HB 2003-2011 are > 8 lbs 6 oz.
Yea me too on purpose.
Spending less time on TB.
