So I made the mistake of stopping into a local shop today and they have a *MINTY* 2003 Skyline Jerry Scheff in Shoreline Gold...asking $999...said that they would deal. I know that this is a very rare bass, but I'm gassing for a 44-60. How do they compare? Can the Scheff get Jazzy?

I don't have a Scheff, never played one in fact, but given the nature of it's rarity, I would be tempted to plunk down and give it a spin. If it's not for you then, I'm sure you won't have much trouble selling it or trading for the 44-60 you're after. It does have two single coils, so in theory it could get "jazzy."

I had a shoreline gold skyline Scheff.
Was a great bass.
I only rolled it to buy Doude's US Scheff.
Both have great tonal range.
And they can get really snotty and snarly.
I have never owned a Fender jazz.
I do own a US Spector which has 2 Aggie J pups in it, with Aggie pre ( not exactly a Fender, LOL)

I would say the Scheff can do pretty much anything you could want it to.
Like Mister Shadow said, give it a rip and if you do not like it?.... it is fairly common finding 44-60 skylines here on TB for sale.
Sure someone will trade ya for it.
Or ya can sell it quickly to spend the $$ on the 44-60.

Ya never know?
Ya might come to really love the Scheff! :D :bassist:

I own a skyline DJ and JO (44-60, meh), both 4 strings.
Now mind you, my DJ has chi sonic pups and the JO has the standard Hansons, but I have also owned a DJ with Hansons in the past. I didn't care for the DJ/Hanson, but the JO with Hansons just purrs. I may have had a lemon, I didn't keep it around enough to find out.

I'm glad to have a vintage sounding one (JO) and a more modern sounding one (DJ with chis) to give variety.

So aside from the obvious pickup differences, you can definitely tell that they both share the same Lakland DNA.

The primary dfference in FEEL, is that the DJ body is smaller than the JO, and that counts for 99% of the feel difference, how it hangs, balance, etc (IMO), the necks are virtually identical, or at least I can't tell the difference. the rest of the 1% is just random noise.

Thanks , I have assuming a skyline 44-60 vintage j with assuming lakland single coils . In my profile pic. I love the sound of this bass with La Bella flats on it , but I want to get a second lakland for round wounds strIngs but like having that vintage jazz sound but with a brighter punch for certain songs . I curious to the chis and if that would fit my bill but not sure . So really it's a choice of just getting another 44-60 in different color or getting the Dj but I really like the block / binding on them. Plus I love the neck on my j . Sounds like I would love the dj . Thanks again .

Here's my custom Lakland with 3 single coil J Sonics.


Aside from the obviously viewable blocks and binding. this bass also has a custom neck profile with a high gloss finish on the back of the neck and headstock, as well as a Hipshot double D-tuner (that allows me to drop the E and A with one flip),

Passing along a Lakland club headsup.
I have decided to let my insanely awesome, drop dead beautiful USA Lakland Decade go to a new home.
I have a behind the scenes possible offer going on, But nothing concrete yet.
If it does not sell to this person, it is being listed to the public for sale most likely later tonight.
I will get into all the details in the thread if that ends up being the case.
This is a one off Pat Wilkins "Firemist Gold" paint job done when it was ordered new.
Pair of single coil Chisonics, Passive, BEM dots, stunning golden color rosewood board, Lakland black logo'ed hardshell case.
Priced fairly...if interested in the bass, send me a PM to grab it should this other guy not be in position to buy it.
