I DID sell off the US Decade to Lee...
And DID let go of that amazing sonic blue US JO...
The decade wen t to help partially fund the buckeye 44-94...so that was justified...
The JO went to fund a diff brand...which is now about to be listed for sale..
wish I could have kept that one. sigh

Yeah...but there are a few Laklands you will not let go.
So im trying to find a preamp for my 5560. Im trying to find something that, forgive me, but is "Fenderish". I love that thick deep fender tone, but I dont know where to start. I prefer a outboard box so I dont have to mod, but seeing as ive heard the Sadowsky, J-retro, and Tonehammer and they dont get me quite there, I think something else is necessary. Ive been looking at the Pensa preamp also. I played a Pensa bass in NYC recently and really dug the sound. Or should I be looking at pickups opposed to pres?

I don't see how the Tone hammer DI won't do it for you. That's such a great preamp
it just doesnt have that fenderish tone, i love it it though, thats kinda why i was wondering is it the pickups over the pre

So I went in to my local music store to pick up some strings and walked out with a very nice used 55-60 Custom. I've been looking for a DJ, but the deal on this one was too good to pass up!
Looks like previous owner swapped out the pups for Basslines. Sounds and plays great.
Currently wearing flats that will be yanked off as soon as I get home. Looking forward to gigging it this weekend. Also probably look into a parchment pickguard or possibly a cream pearloid.

Custom Shop pups? Basslines Quarter Pounders? I have some Alleva Coppolo single coils in my Fender Jazz and they sound fantastic

Everything that I read seems to refer to ampeg on this pre, but is it similar to the fender? Do you have any experience with it by chance?
Yeah...it is like an Ampeg pre. I've own one...I think it works well allowing you to adjust your tone, but is very natural and vintage sounding.
See i guess i should have clarified a bit more, my bad i realize now that i didnt really describe my tone that well, fender is a pretty broad tone lol. Im going more towards the thick fender active tone. Not the Marcus Miller tone but that fat, not to bright type fender tone if that makes sense? Kinda the old American Deluxe type sound? Sorry im terrible at describing tone....
I am learning that everyone's definition of fat, or punchy, or bright, etc., is very different in regards to tone. I think of the classic Fender tone as slightly scooped mids with the tone knob on just a touch, coming through single coils. Perhaps that's why everyone struggles to find "their" tone...
Either way, experiment... that's half the fun!
