I know what you mean, Buckeye burl, and any burled wood is even more amazing in person. the funny thing is that a burled piece of wood can sell for hundreds, even thousands of dollars. I can't wait to read your first impression of the sound. I'm so excited for you!!!
When I got my 44-60 on Monday, I had to wait an entire day before I got 15 minutes with it and until Thursday until I got to use it with the band. I'm not sure what type of witchery Lakland uses on their basses, but I am spellbound!
So since there is no money in it, you may as well play what you love (Lakland) and love what you play...

Burled and spalted have always appealed to my eye.
The zebra wood on my Alembic is knockout too.

So Dan, any plans to paint the new beauty in oils? I think given the nature of oils and all the complexity in the burl it would be challenging but a good medium for it.
