I also went through a bit of a mini crisis re: what I do for a living versus what my film degree says I should be doing, so I went out, got a hottt camera and started a YouTube channel so I could tell myself that I'm not totally wasting it.

Uh, I also started a podcast with a friend at Harvard. All this stuff makes me feel a lot better about myself professionally, even though none of it pays. But it does munch away at my TB time...

I think for me, with this last Lakland (set up passive as 3 single coils, with 3 volumes and a tone) I had a light bulb moment for me personally in regards to how I want to craft my tone.

I tend to mostly leave my amp controls alone to get a good basic tone, and then rely on the 3 pickups to cop and mix of them I want. Between that and hand position and technique, I really don't feel like I'm missing out by not having an onboard Preamp. I feel like the versatility in tone I would achieve with eq would make things too muddy or trebley. Don't get me wrong, I love to tweak knobs but I just find it more insightful having 3 pickups to choose from.
Are the neck pickup and furthurmost bridge coil (typical jazz bass positions) too scooped for fingerstyle? Add a touch of the middle pickup.
When just using the neck pickup to cop a P tone, it sounds very "neckish" but considerably thinner than a real split coil.
-Add subtle amounts of the other pickups to taste.
Ect.

When I started playing bass, I would play a game with myself where I would really think about the bass and pickups needed to achieve the tone on the song I was listening to. Perhaps this came from playing in contemporary worship bands where really all we were doing was playing others' songs. Now when I feel a song is calling for a particular tone, a few knob turns and I can get a tone 80% of the way there in a live environment.
It's like having a personal mixer on your bass

Seriously I think Lakland should offer this "super passive" setup as an option on their 94 line, but how many people would really take to the approach I've fallen in love with? Probably not many.

So, with the new bass I wanted the same thing except for a completely different tonal realm. 5 string Ash body/maple fretboard/single coils/tuned E-High C will be about as far away as you can get tonally from 5 string Mahogany body/ebony fretboard/humbuckers/tuned standard Low B-G. I always wanted a Wal listening to those great humbucker tones by Geddy, Flea, and the like and while it defintely will sound different from one, if I can get close, it's good enough for me in a bass that does not cost $6,000 new and will most likely be lighter. Double Win!

Ha, thanks! I didn't necessarily mean they would make the 3 bucker standard but more what I've got in the other bass. (2 single coils in 1 MM shell and then the neck jazz pickup) It would be easy for Lakland to do and would fit their natural asthetics. After having had both the standard Lakland humbucking pickups in that bass and now the single coils, I greatly prefer these.
Also, I don't think my most recent Lakland elation would exist if these pickups were Barts. I played Barts for years in a million basses from Modulus to Kinal to MTD and Lakland offers the perfect mix of fullness, clarity, and edge.....perfect for me anyways!

That's awesome! Yeah, Carl had someone else in the shop send me a picture of the body. That was what they sent. Even Carl will tell you he's behind the times technology-wise. I don't think his phone takes pictures.
It's ok, I'm fine with a little mystery. I actually did see the wood in it's raw form. I think Carl said it had come from another instrument maker (like classical instruments), and had just sat around for a while before he had gotten it.

I'm going for a Gibson '59 Reissue Bourbon Burst. Has more browns on the sides, and is really nice and bright in the center. A nice contrast to the Blue-Green-Yellow burst of the other one. Something like this, of course it may be up to Carl's interpretation:
