In the end, I went with some smaller black aluminum knobs. But still may change the preamp anyway.
Just landed this 55-94 today with a Redwood top and Ash body Pretty light at around 8.8lbs which feels insane on a bass. First Lakland for me. Feels fantastic as far as playing but there are some electronic issues- hoping that I can either send it to Lakland to replace either the pups or preamp whichever is causing the crackling and dimming out of the volume intermittently. I set the internal mid frequency to 275K and it booms (when the electronics are working)- hopefully the team at Lakland can make it right since it arrived out of the box this way

Thanks! I've tried using De-oxit and all of the usual remedies for dirty electronics to no avail. I believe it may be an actual issue like wiring, or a cold solder, etc. All good I understand that is fixable. I'm just eager to have this beast in top form so I can take it out because the range it produces is really amazing.
I've had/still have all of the standard basses like many of us here (Jazz, Precision, Stingray, Ric) and this 55-94 really does allow me to conjur similar vibes of all of those via it's preamp and toggle switches. Its a fun bass and I love the tangible feel of the 35" scale, tapered B, thru-body combination.
Even with the speed-bump of the electronics, I'm definitely keeping it
Well, that didn’t take long… After getting the 44-02 last week, I jumped on a 55-02 in the classifieds and the consistency between the two is fantastic and for me, switching between both is pretty seamless. I really like the neck on the 5-string and the B-string is a monster. Both are around 9lbs., balance well and are very comfortable to play. Can’t believe in 37 years of bassing I haven’t had one. 
Gorgeous tops on both of those! Very nice score. I also just grabbed a 55. I am digging the stock strings with the red wraps so far. Do you have other options you like that are long enough to run thru-body, made of nickel/silver, and still have a tapered B? definitely a LOGer now!I've mostly been a Sunbeams user other than flats (Labella or GHS). I like the strings on the 55-02 right now, but my 44-02 has Sunbeams and I prefer the feel, so the 55-02 will most likely end up with them (even though the B isn't tapered) when these wear out.
I think Dunlop makes a tapered nickel set and maybe Sadowsky?
Thanks! I believe the electronics issues have now been sorted out- the coil toggle switch had some oxidation on one connect and a no-good solder on another. Both have now been fixed and the bass is functioning as intended. Big and controlled boom. I am loving it
I will check out those recommendations. I do have a set of Sadowsky Nickel XL Blue Labels coming as well. I understand they may not be long enough for thru-body so I am curious if the feel of going through the bridge will feel as good as the stock thru-body setting.

I took it to a shop near me, Action Music, in Virginia- They were able to open it up and quickly identified the culprit so I didn't have to ship it back out or anything. Now the bass is rock solid and amazing as ever. Paired with the GK legacy 800, it's packing a serious thor punch.
I purchased the bass from Midlothian Music in Chicago & the team at Lakland were very helpful via email in the meantime with email correspondence.
I'm a happy camper now
I’m back and forth on buckeye, but I’m all in on this one (no, it’s not mine- i wish)! And that birdseye ‘board!!! 
Any 5501 owners have any pickups they want to move? It can be Quad Coil, Dual Coil, or Split Coil
