A pure jazz sound is not a must for me, I play mostly P basses anyway, so the uniqueness of the one single 4-string J in my arsenal is as much a factor.
Some time ago, I thought to myself - it would be good to try 494 again, some older Bartolini model. It was actually my first Lakland ever 20 years ago. So I looked around and found two, which I could resist to let go - so today, both were delivered. So, NBD!
Not that you don't always post beautiful basses, but those are very nice!

Q. What recommendations do you have for maintaining the neck on my US made Lakland bass?
A. The back of the neck is a hand rubbed oil finish with a thin wax coating. We recommend occasionally cleaning the neck with pure orange oil and reapplying a coating of clear paste wax or bowling alley wax. After applying the wax, allow to dry for five minutes then wipe off the excess. The wax can be scuffed with fine steel wool to produce a satin finish or polished to a dull luster depending on your preference. Avoid cleaners and polishes that contain added thinners or silicone.
We also recommend orange oil for cleaning the fingerboards. The maple fingerboard does not require any sealer after cleaning. We recommend Howard Brand Feed N Wax after cleaning for our rosewood and ebony fingerboards.

Gotchya. Sounds similar to a stingray neck then. I sort of have an aversion to dirty maple fingerboards so this is good information.From the Lakland FAQ

Just an update:
I added a thin neck shim, and things seem to be much better.
Still needs a little fret work at the end of the fingerboard, but it's much more playable until I can get it sorted.
NBD: Lakland 55-02 Deluxe purple-Ebony fingerboard.
This used Lakland just followed me home...

Love the Natural finish/Black guard look!! I've been planning on putting some Nordy Big Singles in my Lakland as well..
-May I ask, after you swapped the Big Single SB's in did you change or stick with the stock pre?? Some bass's are so simple;
Take my MTD Kingston Z- Bartolini 2j-squared + NTMB is just obvious..
Or my American Jazz Deluxe; Nordy nj4's + John East J-Retro Dlx a simple yet perfectly fantastic fit!
BTW, The Bartolini's in your 55-94/02 are those an upgrade, Or just stock from one of the old era 55-94's??

Does anyone else think this odd? Howard Feed and Wax is pretty thick and would leave a healthy coating on the fretboard? Maybe it works?
I would recommend using Howards Orange Oil to clean a rosewood or ebony fingerboard. I use (recommend) Howards Feed & Wax only on the back of a bare maple neck as yes, there is wax left behind that seals the oil in (IMO). I think that's a more complete answer that Lakland (and Carl, which is probably the original source of the recommendation) would approve. For a maple fingerboard, I would use Dunlop 65 cleaner, and avoid any oil on a maple fingerboard.
I also recommend F-one oil for rosewood & ebony fingerboards as a lightweight penetrating oil that works really well.

My 44-02 is natural with bulk guard. It has Bartolini pups with JE UniPre . My 44-01 is the one I put Nordstrand Big Singles in. It has a clear guard on it, with an Awesome, Audere pre.@MaxSpinrun
