Finally had some time to work on my Lakland 55-02 Nordstrand upgrade (Lakstrand/Nordland, lol).
Changes:
- Neck pickup: Nordstrand NJ5s.
- Bridge pickups: Nordstrand MM5.4.
- Balance pot: 500kOhms MN-taper.
- Bridge switch: 4PDT which engages a 2.2nF capacitor when both bridge coils are selected (to simulate Stingray 3EQ preamp).
- Copper tape shielding of all cavities.
I left the LH3 preamp, but set the signal boost trim pot to 0%.
Sound:
Nordstrand are much less polite than the stock LH3. The 500k balance pot has it's pros and cons. On one hand: bass is now usable in passive mode with exactly the same volume level, the MM pickups in parallel + the capacitor has nice resonance peak around 4kHz (however I will try to verify it, to avoid placebo effect), on the other hand, the balance is only useful around the center, if you go beyond 50% in either direction it already sounds like full pan.
I will try to record a couple of samples (they will be sloppy because I am more of a tinkerer than a real bass player).
Findings:
- Skylines' wiring is a rats nest

. Bridge pickup cavity was not even shielded.
- Apparently the Nordstrand MM5.4 pickups do not have polepieces grounding, so they buzz when you touch them. I have grounded them myself (but have work better on one of the polepieces, which still buzzes).
- My Nordstrand J pickup does have a polepiece grounding wire but looks like it has failed, buzz when I touch the polepieces. Only 1 out of 10 polepieces has continuity to ground. Still don't know how to ground them, because the J pickup construction does not expose the polepieces from below, and I am afraid to break it. I have ordered blank pickup covers which do not have the polepieces exposed, so maybe this will be my solution, instead of dealing with grounding.
- The Nordstrand J and MM pickups are not perfectly balanced (which is understandable) so the true middle of the balance tone is actually when I pan it 10% towards neck.
- The noiseless pickups are not perfectly noiseless, I still have some hum in all configurations except both coils of MM (which is perfectly silent, but I guess my capacitor also hides most of the tone - to be verified).
