How "flat-woundy" do you want it to sound? I put the new EBMM cobalt flats on for a while and I liked them a lot. But the sell there was flatwound feel and round wound sound, which they do rather well. But I'll admit they're not for everyone. Depends a lot on what sound you're wanting.

Well, with mixed feelings "Knobby" is getting a new pre. I found an East U-Retro that should get me very close of the DJ Retro tone and output I love so much. I was very happy to find one. And I happened to have a spare PG so what the heck. Makes it an easy swap.

Whadda you think of the look? It's a bit more normal and tame. Most folks won't look twice the new arrangement.

As I eagerly await the production of my new black and tort pickguards for my modded 55-60, I have been tinkering with the setup and doing a little exploratory meddling with it.

I removed the neck and discovered that it was apparently first painted with the limited Teal Green Metallic paint before it was finally sprayed with black! I can't wait to see if the green pops through as I start gigging with this thing and bang it up a little! Sorry folks, I took no pics of the neck pocket though in retrospect, I wish I had.

Those pickups are Aguilar DCBs. They have a very authoritative sound, are a great match with this bass and really deliver a raw throaty punch in their current passive setting. I may add a preamp one day...or not.

Gas and a killer deal struck again! 2006 44-02, LH3 pre and p'ups, and in pretty good shape. It's got what appears to be a suicidal g-string, but that can be solved with a new nut, or so I've heard. Still, it sounds pretty good through my practice setup. Wednesday night will tell me whether I want to keep it.

I may have asked already but who made it? I had a DJ5 pickup made a couple weeks ago by Chandler/Pickguard Heaven and the first attempt was not so good. Neck cutout to control plate alignment was so far off it was unusble. Sent back to remake. Fingers crossed. We shall see.

Speaking of black & Maple...

A couple quick and dirty cell phone pics of the new pickguards. I dig them both alot! Much better than the stock mint guard. It's a bit hard to decide between the two...I sort of wish I hadn't ordered both.
