Lakland Owners Group #69

So I really played my new 55-01 for the first time this weekend. The setup still wasn't quite right (it is now) but I fell in love. I never realized how deep the cutaway on the bottom horn was until I was playing some double stops way up on the neck....WOW! Talk about effortless!!

Now that the setup is complete, I've dialed in the electronics and gotten the string height right in relation to the pickups, I'm unbelievably impressed! I have a feeling this bass will be around for quite some time. I've played LOTS of different basses, and so far, this bass is killing it!

I also just ordered a fresh set of knobs from Lakland...the same they put on the 55-94....that should really help giving me a point of reference for the eq and blend. I'll post some pics once she's all updated.

I'm about to be back in the club! Skyline DJ5 should be arriving early next week. My neck/shoulder demands I keep an eye out for lightweight basses. So when this 9-lb DJ5 popped up, I had to grab it. As you can tell from my avatar, I like the look!:-)

How different are the skyline basses from the USA made ones ? Might be in the market for a new bass, and Lakland is one of the ones Im thinking of, but Im not interested in paying the high price the US made ones carry (just dont have those funds).

I've tried the Audere. A good pre.
Just curious, are you wishing you had a fuller sound?
DJs always hit me as a little sterile sounding.
If so, the tone goal might be better served with a change in pickups, instead of pre. If you like the tone just fine, then yes, the Audere will allow you to give it more beef. If it were me an my money, I would get some Nordstrands.

Haven't received the DJ5 yet, but I usually like to have a preamp to increase versatility since we do a wide-ish range of tunes. I'll give the pickups a whirl before getting the preamp or doing a change. But thinking I'll want a preamp regardless of pickups.

I own a dj5 with the audere 3 band preamp and it's my #1 bass. It's very transparent and doesn't change the tone of the bass. To me it sounds like a quiet boosted passive bass. Z mode is great. I prefer Audere over j retro because of this. Not to mention cost is reasonable.

Thanks, I appreciate that input. I've done the J-Retro with Barts in a JO5 and liked it. But now looking to do more of a passive tone - boosted - with the DJ5. So I like what you're saying.

Did you do the order with Audere letting them know if was for a DJ and mount it on the plate yourself?

Yout will need to order a new dj5 plate from lakland. About 25.00. Get the audere jz3 preamp. Easy to install in the plate. You'll need to drill 2 holes. One for the led light the other for the switch. Mine took a little adjusting to get the battery to fit but not much. The audere guy is real cool. I forgot his name but he'll walk you through any questions you have.

I've been considering and Audere as a replacement for a Bartolini NTMB. Does the Audere have better highs than the NTMB? I love the NTMB, but lately I'm craving somethimg more HiFi.
