If you’re happy with the Skylines, stick with them! They are great!! You’re spot on for the most part, the electronics and similar woods make a 55-01, 55-14, and 55-94 all about equal... especially when you run them through outboard gear... but that’s another drunken tirade! The difference is when you pop up things you can’t get on the Skylines... and that was the difference for me.

I find the difference between flat sawn and quarter sawn necks to be enough for me to want the US with quartersawn... I *think* the extra stiffness helps harmonics to “pop” just a bit more... that could be voodoo, but it’s my impression from playing 55-94’s & 55-14’s back to back. Additionally I really dig the growl of ebony fretboards on a 5 string... so that’s another pro in the US column for me...

Add to that, my “dream” bass was a 55-94 with birds eye maple too, no marker Ebony fretboard and black finish headstock, and when one of those came up it was completely worth it to move 2 skylines to snatch it up!

So- if you want to sell the 55-02’s to get the “standard” 55-94, you might not see much difference... if you want to take advantage of custom choices, you’ll see a lot!

I’ve had limited experience with ebony fretted basses and they weren’t my favorite. Not sure if it is the ebony though, or other factors.

Just picked up this 05' fretless from a Reverb seller a few weeks ago. This Lakland was an expat living in Japan. It was "custom" ordered from the factory. Notice the non-standard matching headstock. It sounds and plays like a dream. I'm glad to have brought this one back to USA soil. (ps....the gold 494 is a 98'. Aero pups and Nordstand preamp)

It's interesting I actually don't like the mwah. My ideal fretless is one that you cannot tell it's fretless but gives you the freedom of playing fretless. That is how I use mine. Never once has anyone even noticed i am playing fretless and have been doing it as such for years

So true. It's really weird too, I find lined fretless so hard to play. But unlined and it's second nature. Its so intetesting how our brains work

Well... I found what I was looking for but it's not a Lakland......

I just bought a Sandberg California TM5 off of the classifieds. For the price I couldn't pass it up. I have a few things I'm going to move to cover costs.

I've never owned one or played one, but from the specs and the reviews, I think it'll be well worth it.

Anyone ever owed a Sandberg? Any opinions or thoughts on the matter??
