Lakland Owners Group #69

My 55-14 produces that single coil 60 cycle hum anytime I use the jazz pickup, so I'm considering replacing it with a Nordstrand split coil jazz pickup to eliminate the hum. If I do that, I'd probably just go ahead and replace the MM pickup with the Nordstrand MM as well. Thoughts on this? Pros/cons?
Also, which size of jazz pickup would it use? Nordstrand makes a few different sizes.

It makes no sense that it is the single coil hum as the 55-14(94) pickups are split coil (quad coil on the bridge). Unless yours is a special order.
But in case you really want to try the Nordstrand set, I am about to unload a pair, let me know. They sound great on the 55-94.

Hmmm, I had assumed that the Jazz pickup was single coil, because it hums when I have the pickups panned to the middle, and especially if I pan all the way to the neck. Also, the MM pickup doesn't hum when I have the coil switch in the center position, but it hums if I move the switch to either side. So I had assumed the MM was dual coil. My bass is the 55-14, which doesn't have the option of a different pickup system, other than the stock LH3.

I had the same issue with a 44-02, turned out to be that one of the ground leads from the neck pu wasn't connected quite right. Contact Lakland and explain the situation, if you're the original owner, they'll take care of it. And if you're not, they'll probably still help you out in diagnosing it at the least.

Look at the back of the neck pup and make sure that it is per this pic. I had the same issue and running a bead of solder solved the problem. This is common for some reason.

Gosh, it's been so long since I've been on here, not out of want but simply that I've just been play'in the bass! Man, so good. P bass, Musicman, Miscellaneous sounds, all there. (Not jazz bass though, even with the humbuckers set to single coil, VERY different) I think the strange pickup placement lends itself to this. It's almost like having a pickup in the P position (front) MM position (middle) and an added bonus with an extra pickup squeezed in there between the middle pickup and the bridge.

The bass does sound nice and dark with this mahogany body. So drastically different from the other one which is Cut City. Great to have that low B again too. 34" scale feels so nice.

When I feel like I need more cut, I just play the blue one with singles. It's a nice thing to have variety.

I was gonna wait for a new Lakland Thread to repost , but Eh, oh well.

They matched better than I thought. This bass is a tonal beast with the Nordstrand Big Splits and the Nordstrand pre. Gonna take me a while to get used to the different combinations.View attachment 416271
