Well it’s been a long time since I had a Lakland but I’ll soon be back in that number next week when I get my new to me 5594. I’ve had three other 5594’s but it's been over a decade since I had one. I truly love the 5594 and am excited to be getting another one. Pics to follow.

I had some tight Hipshots on a 44-51 and I took them apart, cleaned with some WD40, quick buff with some micromesh, a little graphite lube, reassemble and they were good as new. Cheaper than new tuners.

So, I'm really liking the feel and the ridiculous B string of the 5594 I took in on trade last week. It has a killer neck feel, a tad modern for my tastes, but sounds great in a mix, but I couldnt help notice in a band rehearsal that the A string was kinda weaker than the others. Though maybe it was the rig or the setup until I searched, and sure enough, its a thing with the Hanson pickup set. I really dont want to sink hundreds of dollars into a replacement set of Nords or Aguilars, but its kind of a drag, as it was noticeable to me pretty quick. Especially since the bass feels really nice. Any advice on mitigating this? I have a set of XL's on it that are 45,65,80,100,125. Perhaps an 85 on A will help fill it out a little?

Call them! If it's a known issue, I will guarantee that they will rectify it for you! Lakland CS is amazing!
Depending how old it is, maybe reach out to Lakland? Mine was just over 2 years old (and out of warranty) and they swapped the hum canceling for single coils, which are really good sounding pickups...
I think Lakland cares more about us having instruments we are happy with than they do about warranties expiring. That's been my experience anyways. And, if I was a builder, I would want all of my products working properly as a testimony to my work.

Spoke with one of the techs at Lakland. Super helpful, informed and friendly. Long story short, has anyone compared or tried the single coil J and MM set in their 55-94 or 55-02? That is the official fix for this, and they are offering it at a nice deal. Curious about the tonal differences and how bad the single coil hum on the J is. Thx.

I've found that sometimes, if Hipshot tuners have been sitting a while, they get 'stuck' somewhat. If you're comfortable doing so, taking them apart, cleaning, and reassembling has worked wonders for me in the past.

It is mostly straightforward, but be aware of the screw that holds the tuning shaft in... it uses a small Allen wrench, and can be hard to break loose, resulting in a rounded screw head. I think they put something like Loctite on it.
Never heard anything about this. Although, I’ve only had experience with old Bart sets in my 5ers.
I had the single coils swapped in at the Lakland shop- they are very nice punchy sounding pickups, and you can still use the coil switching in the MM pickup. The only hum I remember getting was when any of the pickups were soloed (neck or one of the mm’s by itself).
I eventually switched (well, had Carl Pedigo do it) the whole LH system for newer bart stuff, which I was happy with, but at the time I was paranoid about single coil hum, now I have three basses with single coils (all jazzes) and am less concerned.

I listened to it again today for a while, and I think I got a little too obsessive about it all. I dont really want to change it, because the humcancelling set is so compelling sounding. In fact, one of the first things I noticed about the bass is how even it is. the tone is so consistent up and down the neck.
Another factor I am wondering about is that I have 45 65 80 100 125 Daddario XK strings on it. It may be mildly accentuating an already very subtle issue, and I'm gonna put a conventional set on with an .85 A string and see if it helps a little to fill out that area that is intrinsically thinner with this set on it. I have a feeling it'll render any issue negligible.
I am curious about the swap, but I also think I just went too far down the rabbit hole and got OCD to a degree about something that is ultimately really subtle and that in a band mix wasnt really perceptible.

Give D’addario steels a shot! Give the 43-63-85-107-127 set a try, and give them time to mellow out. They’re better balanced in my opinion and according to tension charts. I’ve never understood the sets with lighter A and E strings. The D and G should be lighter, if anything, or the B, E, and A should be heavier, in relation.
