Today will be a NBD for me. It's out for delivery and I'm waiting rather impatiently for the delivery knock on the door. Trying a newer 55-94 that has the Lakland pickups and preamp compared to the one with Bertolini setup that has become my main bass. It's also a rosewood vs BEM fretboard. Although I'm not sure the wood makes that much tone difference compared to the electronics.

Next I need to put my 2017 custom 44-64 PJ up for sale and get a 5 string PJ. Will be sticking to 5 string basses.

Well black beauty 55-94 showed up finally about 4 hours after the UPS delivery window ended. Better late than never. It's about 9.2lbs and came with intonation and string heights perfect. Back of the neck is not as smooth as the older Laklands so I'll do the 'treatment ' on it.

The fretboard was the roughest one I've ever come across too. But after 5 hours working on it the neck and fretboard are smooth as silk, body is polished, pickups heights adjusted to Lakland specs and new strings. Ready to fire it up tomorrow.

No but it's only about 2 years old I think. But it is unusual considering how smooth my other Laklands have been. Maybe it had picked up moisture somewhere along the way.

Actually it sanded out pretty easily but there was about an hour of letting the orange oil and then the feed n wax soak in. Once for the neck and then again for the fretboard. Could have saved time by doing the together. Then I did the full check of all the screws and new strings, relief, string heights, pickup heights, intonation, etc. Found steel wool caught up in one of the tuner gears and had to get that out to free it up. But it sounds great and the price was right. Lol.

The build quality is top notch as in my other 3 Laklands except for the neck finish, which I like to be super smooth. This one is new enough where you can still slightly smell the wood still. It was likely in a high use situation for a while.

Two others have the BEM fretboard so they are smooth due to the finish. The best neck of them all for finish and action is the oldest one I have with a rosewood fretboard that I've heard was made by Dan Lakin right before he left the company. That one is bound and blocked though.

Nice. You'll have to find distractions to avoid watching the clock. Lol. Is it the beauty with bound and blocked neck sold on the classifieds here that I just missed?

IT'S HERE!

After 16 months wait (the German distributor SUCKS), it's made it and is the only one in Europe. A Lakland 55-02 fretless in Honeyburst .
Plays beautifully, although the nut sits VERY low. Other fretless lakie owners tell me if it's supposed to be filed lower than the fretted models.

It sounds immense, and is a great companion to my DJ 4.

Every video and sound clip I've heard has the 55-02 sounding a lot more 'polite' than a jazz or precision or stingray, but this one just growls like mad. The mwah is still there though, in spades. Many thanks to Leo at lakland, and our very own Doug, for wading through truly rubbish customer service from the distributor (and to a lesser extent the shop), in order to get this out to me.

I now buy laklands at the rate of one every eleven years. Roll on 2030...

Yup...the LH3 makes a great growly Fretless!

I've owned several... And loved them.

My current Lakie Fretless basses are

5560 with the LH3 PRE
Carlo 55 dual humbucker with lh3

And yes... They sound great!

As for the nut... Yes... Having it filed a bit lower is fine....

That color is great as well!

Congrats

....and you need a quicker cycle on the next one my friend!
