Apologies as I'm sure this has been covered but I couldn't find it via search - are there any known issues with getting the B (.128) from Lakland 5-string sets to go through the body on a 55-02? E-G strings no problem - the B string however wouldn't fit through the body so I had to run it through the bridge and now the thin wire by the ball end is what is resting on the saddle - clearly I'm no expert but that can't be good. I did find reference here to using a .125 but it doesn't appear that the B in any of the 5-string sets sold by Lakland come in that gauge - I can't imagine they would sell branded strings that don't work on their basses so how would I overcome this user error on my part?
You seem to have a Skyline that either does not have the holes perfectly aligned with the bridge or smaller/imperfect holes. Skylines get D’Addario strings from the factory, that’s probably why it passed QC. I’d email [email protected].
As for the thin wire resting on the saddle, this is not a problem. In fact it is meant to be that way. It would happen if you were able to string it through the body as well. See my pic attached. These are Lakland strings.

Agreed with Macribas- taper core and exposed core strings will all have the thin(ner) part on the saddles, nothing to worry about… see attached pic of my F Bass with F Bass strings with exposed cores- more extreme than the Lakland strings with taper cores

Yeah, the only 'issue' with the exposed core strings is that you might have to raise the saddles a little further to offset the lack of winding going over the said saddle. No big deal, but could be an issue if you're already near the top of the saddles adjustment.

Skyline 44-01 and 55-01 owners:
Anyone tried changing the pickups or preamp? What did you go for and what were the results? Was it worth it? As far as I’m concerned there is nothing wrong with my 44-01 but I can’t stop the voices in my head saying “what if...?”
slightly different question: Did you try changing the preamp switches first? What did you think of the results? I’m probably going to DI and record the various combinations of pup and switches so I can then A/B them quickly to see the difference. Any suggestions for any of the above?
one last question: what amp do you prefer to hear your Skyline through? I found mine sounds better (to me) through my Ampeg BA that through my Rumble. I might have to invest in one of the new Rocket combos.

I've had two 55-01's now where I've swapped out the MK1 p'ups and pre for full US Bartolini MK5C p'ups and NTMB preamp. Best combination ever, really brings 55 or 44-01's up to the levels of MTD etc (sound wise anyway).

Initially swapped the pre in my 55-01 for a Bart NTMB HR5.2AP and found that it really brought some life to the MK1 pickups. But, like you said, “what if…?” got to me and I then upgraded the pickups for a set of Nordstrand Big Splits and haven’t felt the need to explore further.
These seem to be the go to upgrades. My forum search showed up threads on this but nothing newer than 2015 so I wondered if there were more options now. I guess, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
