What was your reasoning for going with the Nordstrand?
Forgive my ignorance, I've never entertained the idea of switching p'ups and preamp... I've been a passive player forever, seems like... but I do love my Duck Dunn
Top is my 2004 5594 and bottom is my awesome (new to me - thanks Fred312b!) 2000 model. Yours will have the old barts with the recessed lettering.
To me, the old barts are smoother in the mids with much more top end. The new barts have more mid honk or “hardness” and much less top end. I found that changing the mids in the pre to 250 HZ helped tame some of the honk. Going to 700 or 850 made it more apparent.
I have used the 2004 extensively live and in rehearsal. That mid range emphasis makes it cut like no ones business.

Nordstrand pups are very high quality. As a company, they are great to work with. If you put pups in a 44-01, make sure Nordstrand puts them in P2 sized shells. 5 string pups are that size. My first set of Big Singles were not, and slightly smaller than the pup cavity. The retailer I bought them from totally messed the order up more than once! After that I dealt directly with Nordstrand, they took back the used pups and replaced them with what I needed at no charge! Have also put Jazz Bar pups in the 01 as well. The are essentially 70’s j bass winds. Overall I like the Big Singles better. With the Audere pre I can go passive if I wish, but never do, I’m active all the time. John East pre are killer as well. Have one as well as a Nordstrand MM PUP in a Sub Ray I have that just is just so versatile. My next plan is to put a John East UniPre with sweepable mids in a 44-02. IMHO, CONTROL of the mids are crucial. The pre is highly configurable.What was your reasoning for going with the Nordstrand?

Keep us posted! I'm looking forward to hear this. I have the U-Retro with Big Singles (or Big Splits, can't remember) on another bass. I often think about how it would sound in an -02.

The Unipre has a passive tone, selectable EQ points for treble and bass and the treble has pull bright function. Can be run on 18 volts as well.
I've a uni-pre in my 55-94 with what thanks to @kmd88 I now know is the older `barts.
`As well as what @MAXSPINRUN just said other major pluses is buffered active blend, and you can set the frequencies of the treble and bass controls
Sounds like an interesting mod! My previous experiences with 55-94 mods were always in the pickup area, never in the pre. To the point that I am convinced that most of the tone signature comes from the LH3.
couldn’t say, my bass cabs with Bart pre and pickups!
For me the pickups have a very distinct sound, they are quite low output passive and have Massive harmonic richness and a big bottom low mids thing going on which I like and suits what I’m doing (and is the opposite Tonally to the Sadowsky single coils in my other bass). I also suspect the coils of the MM style pickup are tuned to help get a MM sound and a jazz sound. So I didn’t want to chsnge them.
I struggled with the preamp however... so I changed it!
I have been reading these posts and I have seen about Lakland owners changing pickups but of the newer 55-02 Skylines, I haven't seen any about playing with the newer LH3 preamp settings and what the results were.
I did post a thread about the inner LH3 preamp settings and I did have one poster respond back on the thread saying he did try it and didn't notice much difference. I would think there would be a bigger difference. I'm going to have to find time to try this, I think there could more flexibility and change in tone than we think. It should be kind of like changes on the preamp section of the amps but not as drastic. I can't promise but when I do do this I will try to post some sound clips which may take some time since my new job takes up alot of my time now.
I do know that LH3 Preamp and the newer Lakland pickups do sound really really nice in my rig. It was clear with very good upper end without any harshness at all. Mids were sweet and bass was very good and detailed. I was having all kinds of fun with playing with the tone controls on my Lakland 55-02 Deluxe. So much so, I never had to move the Carvin BX1500 tone controls away from center, so actually I may be able to use the amp section only for most of the stuff I will be playing. One thing I did notice but will have to go back and confirm was when I tried my new Sterling SUB Ray 4 with Aguilar pickup, was just a tad more warmer, which is fine with me because that is what I was after anyways and like the Lakland...I didn't have to go messing with the amp. I don't want 3 basses sounding exactly alike.
I'm very happy with with all my Three basses now The Fender MIM Jazz with EMG pickups and preamp, The Lakland 55-02 Skyline Deluxe, and the newer addition Sterling SUB Ray4 with Aguilar pickup. These were the types of basses I was after very good feel, playability, and awesome tone/sound. I things change over time but I may now be set for good with what I have.
I really think the Lakland 55-02 Skyline Deluxe I have is a fine axe in stock form and with a good setup could rival some very expensive basses. Personally, any change in pickups would be all up to personal tastes which is cool because that is what we are after anyways. What one person likes others may not like. Some have recommended I swap out the pickups in my Lakland but I love the way it sounds and think it would not better what I have now in that bass.
I have played a MTD 535 which was very nice, but sounded kind of congested and that shocked me, could have been a bass preamp/amp mismatch? I would still like to get one due to how beautiful those basses look, play and sound, but my Lakland is special to me and I love way it plays and sounds would be happy with just that one Hi End Bass.

I've liked the 494/5594, but I have better luck with P bass tones. Has anyone ever had the factory make P/MM?
