Lakland Owners Group #69

Well, I got my 55-94 back with the new neck and properly adjusted, so they've mostly redeemed themselves by giving the instrument the attention they should have the first time around. The hardshell case remains a major disappointment. The only use the case has had has been for Lakland to ship the bass to me and for me to ship it back. I decided to put my skyline in it to transport over to my tech to deal with fret sprout and noticed that the center compartment is already separating and falling apart. Lakland do themselves no favors using such poorly made cases. I think they would be better served shipping in a good quality gig bag if they're not willing to include a good quality hard case.

Hi guys and girls. My local music shop has a second hand 55-02 with an Audere Pro Z preamp installed. When researching this bass online I've seen alot of people say it is on the tamer side and lacks aggressive character, so maybe look to a stingray or L2500(which I've owned both and love) of that's what you are after. Anybody here have experience with the Audere preamp and does it give it any more sizzle/aggression? I'm really liking the thought of what a 35" scale can give.

Sorry for the hijack but if I hadn't just bought my first Lakland yesterday ( a similar 55-02) I would be asking you buy this for me... That should be a great combo for tone from the other Audere's I've heard but a string ray it is not.

I can tell you for certain that either the Lakland or Bartolini equipped 55-02's can come close to the Stingray sound but come nowhere near an L2500. The G&L's have so much baked in tone to their preamps that I personally found them unpleasant and untameable...for me. With that said, an Audere is typically going to be on the more mellow end of the spectrum than either the Lakland or Bart pre's but probably brings out and augments the inherent tone of that bass very nicely.

I also use an Audere 4 band in my 55-60 (along with others) and find that it accentuates the inherent tone of the bass so if the bass itself is gnarly and grunty, the Audere will highlight that inherent tone very nicely. I have not found them to impart gnarly or grunty if it's not already there to begin with. Just my experience with them.

I had a ‘77 ray here for a bit with the option to buy … with my John east equipped 55-94 classic (1999 Bart pickups) got 95% of the way there so I passed. In the last year the value of the Ray has more than doubled so, yeah …

It's funny. You ask ten people and get ten different experiences. I have been an Audere fan and user for a long time and the main reason is that they didn't impart a whole lot of their own charachter into the bass. And that's not a knock. I have consistantly said that the Audere are the most 'musical' preamps I have ever used. I loves my East's and those were muscular and aggressive to me, in a very positive way. And I can almost get there when I want to with the Audere but under normal circumstances they're just a perfect tone tool always impactful but always polite. Like others, mine are in J basses, one DJ5 and a G&L JB5, and perfect for me in both. Note that I like a bright, bouncey modern sound, not so much the standard 'vintage' sound if that helps at all. As far as the 55-02 goes I don't see why the experience wouldn't be close to the same. And, albeit an unpopular opinion, I had two 55-02 over the years and could never bond with the stock electronics package. I know it's USA made and top shelf but not for me. You might just wake that one up. Good luck.

I have a 44-01 with a custom Audere pre 4 band. Mine has a 6 position Z mode rotary switch. As mentioned, the Audere is what I would describe as neutral, but the EQ can enhance and change the tone significantly when combined with the Z mode switch.
Still not there yet but I want a 44-02 with a John East Unipre that has sweepable mids. That’s where it’s at for me.

I’m thinking of taking my last stab at playing a 5 string. The bass will no doubt be used and bought sight, unseen. It will be a Lakland because I’m pretty confident that I will like it as much or more as any other brand. My Lakland experience with 4 strings has been very good. I like their necks and smaller frets.

so I think I want a 5560 or a DJ5. Anyone here have any experience with both? Are the necks discernibly different? From what I’ve read, the DJ5 has a different taper. I’m a J bass neck sorta guy, but I came to like the shallow but wider neck of my 4402. I don’t think I would care so much about the body shape.
