Lakland Owners Group #69

Not really bass related but music related.

One of my wife's uncle's passed away last year.

One of the things that he had in the house amongst many other things was an Old violin that goes back in the family over 150 years

Here is what it looked like when I got it

I took it to a local shop to have it cleaned and restrung.

They said they were afraid to put too much tension on the strings as they felt it might break the tailpiece or worse.

It is not in playable condition but they sure clean it up quite a bit.

Here is the final product.

The case is the original " coffin case".

I cut some plexiglass to fit and purchased an old cheap poster frame to use as the framing pieces.

All of the stuff at the bottom of the display was found in the case with the violin. As you can see someone hand cut a three-string tail piece for it at one point.

I'm in the same boat with GregC as far as enjoying excellent experiences dealing with Lakland. Having had 3 rare opportunity's to visit both the old Lakland factory with Dan at Dan's Dad's tire building and the new shop with John P running the show; every time Ive had positive interactions. While living in Texas, I bought a USA 55-63 from Dan in 2003 (waited 6 months for build) and 2 Skylines direct from John at the new shop when visiting Chicago!! The funny part is I just called yesterday talked to Brian with a pickup question, got through immediately and was taken care of. 2 months ago I called with specific questions dealing with DJ plates, talked to Leo and it was all good. I agree with the other Talkbassers, give some specifics and lets see if JP and crew makes it right!!

I had a NBD post detailing the issues. My new 55-94 is back at the factory for a new neck due to their QC not finding the tear out at the end of the fretboard. A longer bridge screw for the E string because the saddle is only half on the screw when intonated. The end strap button wasn’t secure and continually comes loose. The bass did not receive a setup before it left the factory. My guess is it came off the PLEK and into the box. I couldn’t set the action to factory specs, the G string saddle bottomed out higher than their spec. When I got the bass, it was so far out of spec I had take some time to relax and not drive up there and shove it so far down someone’s throat they would have visit a proctologist. Hopefully, the new neck and their attention to actually performing a QC will resolve these issues.

But other than that... ;)

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience with them, but hopefully it will get taken care of. Not that it makes it any better, but US Laklands aren't plekked, the fretwork is done by hand, so in theory it would have received somewhat of a set up. Being on TB for awhile, I've seen horror stories about just about every manufacturer, and while that doesn't help you at the moment, Lakland is pretty responsive to things (I'm local, so I'm sure that makes it a bit easier for me) and will hopefully get it right. I had an electronics issue that happened just after the warranty expired :rollno:, and they took care of me (dropped it off Thursday, picked it up Friday), but that's a lot quicker fix than a new neck (I waited a whole year for a new neck from another brand, but to be fair, that was during COVID, and it is an excellent neck). I 100% agree with you on their new OHSC's though- I thought it was a Skyline case at first.

My recent experience with a Lakland custom (which will be my 2nd) has been excellent. John pinged me yesterday to finalize a couple of loose end deets before they started milling the body (neck is done). On a parallel note, in terms of C19 and "service"....maybe this is somehow relevant......I work in a multispecialty medical clinic with 60 employees......at one point we had 12 people out with C19 (3 very sick, others mild but isolating)...including all 6 of our radiology receptionists, 2 techs and 2 MDs......clinic packed full of patients (about 25% with known cancers).....and several times we had quite healthy outpatients (coming in for routine stuff like checkup-related chest xrays, etc) erupt in fury because they felt we weren't up to speed/ providing the service they expected....I only post this to remind us all that "everyone has his/her own story", and unless we know that story, patience is the way forward. If Lakland is like most other businesses, it has likely had some speed bumps and sink holes to navigate......as long as they follow up and replace their divots with a smile and continue to make such pleasing instruments, I'll remain on board. The last month or so of waiting is tough......it'll be a 54-RP (55 body shape, 34" scale, single reversed P pup, passive), trans black over chambered ash/rw board/tort/blk painted headstock :)
