to me, the barts sound darker than the Lakland/LH. I've heard that from others as well, so you would definitely have different tone than with your 4-94, whether that tone is pleasing to you, only you can decide.

Hello LOG! I've just used my '99 Joe Osborn (best bass I've ever had) to enter a contest on Gigg.com. Winner gets to spend a day in the studio with the great Lee Sklar. If you have a chance to check it out, I'd love your vote! Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight isn't a technical tour de force of bass, and neither am I, but it's a great example of playing to the song. IMO this Lakland really nails the tone of Lee's '62 Jazz bass.

I wouldn't call any '00 or older Bart-loaded 4-94 or 55-94 "dark" but I HAVE heard that term used often for the Skylines that came out in '02 and US basses from '01 on that had the "new" Barts.
I acquired a used '05 55-94D that had Barts. Sounded good but very polite/smooth and quite scooped. It definately sounded big and the 3 band eq did a great job of boost and cut. It just didn't have the snarl/growl(even after adjusting the mid freq via trim) i wanted as i play mainly rock.
Made the decision to swap to Lakland/Hanson PUs and LH3 pre. World of difference. All the growl and vintagey vibe i needed or more modern tones depending on eqing. Replicated the P, J, MM tones a lot better. The 3 band eq didn't have as much cut/boost but still within very usable range. More mid freq selections via trim. IMHO it is much more versatile than the Barts.

I wish someone could compare an "old" Bart, post '01 "new" Bart, and an LH3 setup. I love the old Barts so much that I've bought an extra set just to have on hand, preamp too. And if anyone else has an old 55 set, I'll buy em.

IMO, very subtle difference in the old Bart vs new Bart. Maybe a little more presence and crisper highs in the new Barts., old Bart's are definitely dark. The LH3 vs the New Bart is a different story. The new Barts are tight and well defined, can get growly and aggressive but are balanced. The LH3 is all of that with a little more growl and a more "alive", "3 dimensional" sound. I love the Bart's, but find myself wanting something with the LH3 lately as it gets a tone that is just more satisfying for some mixes. Not sure if I'll buy another 55-01 and put the LH3 and Chisonics in it or another 55-02D with the LH3 setup.
What Tex said about old vs new Barts goes against what I've heard.... it's opposite actually. But, I'm not saying he's wrong, just that it's not what I've heard before.
BUT, I just jammed with my band and I have a Classic series Stingray (very aggressively bright) that I can compare with my old Bart Laklands. The Laklands are much more tame. But I can get the Laklands to sound bright if I want. The 'Ray I try to tame down a bit. But that's a taste/preference thing.

That's the thing about ears, everyone's are different! Amp and cab settings and preferences make this a purely interpretive debate.
However, the "old Bart's" the I have played were in Pedulla's and replacements in basses past. This could make me totally unqualified to answer.

Thanks Greg, finally took the plunge and glad I did.
I've seen quite a few HoBo's that are quite stunning, but there's something about this one aesthetically that really grabs me.
