Okay Lakland club. I've been intrigued by Lakland basses for a long time. I'm looking for a bass to be an all-around workhorse bass… something versatile that sounds good in a classic rock, blues, country setting, but can also handle the occasional slap bass or even jazz or orchestra pit setting.
I have my eye on a US 55-94 and I'm just about to pull the trigger. I dig the pickup setup and the variety that comes with the coil tap.
I don't have a dealer nearby to play it, but I've listened to a ton of sound samples and demos. I really like what I hear.
Someone talk me into it. What do you like about Lakland? 55-94 owners, is it as versatile as I'm perceiving?

Neal (funk generator) is selling "our" 55-94 with Barts. To me it is "better" (more versatile) than the newer ones with Lakland electronics.

I had it refinished by Pat Wilkins and converted all hardware to black (very hard to do at the time). Let me know if you need more info on it.
I bought my first Lākland, a 55-94, via eBay about…. 18 years ago. I drove to Nashville to pick it up. I'd never played a Lākland and I didn't know basses could look and play so good! It raised the bar significantly for me, when it came to knowing what a bass could be. I've never stopped owning and buying Laklands ever since.
Just get the 55-94 and thank us later… trust me.
I bought my 55-94 (a 1998 with Barts) about 3 years ago. I had primarily played jazz basses at that point but got the itch for a different style 5 string. I'd never seen or played a 55-94 in person but I liked what I saw and read online so I took a gamble...sold a few basses for funds and bought a 55-94 from across the country.
It is an amazingly comfortable bass to play. Perfectly balanced and the feel of that neck is something else. With the bridge set almost at the end of the body, it feels shorter scale than my Fenders even though its 35". The tone is rich, smooth and even across all the strings. If I need a little more aggression out of it, an overdrive pedal does the trick nicely. I think it would be perfect for what you need.
I wanted some different EQ options than the stock Bartolini preamp so I installed an East Unipre 5 in mine.
The fact you're asking here tells me you've already made your decision. Get on with it already!
Here are mine; Top 1998 w/Barts, Bottom 2006 w/LH3. I just used the 2006 to record our upcoming EP because it sounded more like a Jazz bass than my Jazz bass did.

Yes, extremely versatile. I use my 98 55-94 at Church (variety of CCM music/styles/etc) and have used in cover bands playing all types of genres (Talking Heads/Warren Zevon/Johnny Cash/The Band).
Oh man, I thought I was set with my DJ-4 and 44-64 Fretless. Now you all have me thinking of a 44-02.
While I too prefer the Bartolini pickups and electronics, the Lakland stuff isn't bad. This video is older (and has a younger Ian Allison), but it should give you an idea about the versatility.
And they are comfortable, easy to play basses too. Granted, mine have all been set up by Carl Pedigo at Lakland (not to brag too much
), but the body shape and neck profile are really well thought out (and they're usually light weight too) and makes then just a pleasure to play.

@basspraiser is NOT joking. After I got my first one, they convinced me it's best to get Laklands in pairs.
I generally don't show this because it's kinda embarrassing. It's like OCD and consumerism combined.

Yeah! The older Lākland birdseye was insane! I know of a source for WICKED master grade maple. I need to put a bug in John P's ear! We need more fretboards like that!The neck on that top one is sick!!
