Lakland Owners Group #69

Update with the full story from the seller:

He's travelling this week, and din't have recent photos of the bass. He sent me a photo of the bass as it was when he received it. The pickup had been replaced, and the preamp was of an unknown type.

The current owner has installed Lakland pickups and an LH3 preamp. He's sending updated pics of everything when he gets home, and I'm not making any decisions until then.

So that's the story so far. I'm still probably buying it, if everything looks good from the pictures. The seller has a lot of great feedback on the Norwegian used market, and is knowledgeable when I ask specific questions. As long as the Lakland electronics are installed properly, I don't foresee any issues.
Do it!!

Just took this 2006 Lakland Skyline 55-02, in a trade. Long story but got involved in a trade, that when I offered a four string 44-02,Lakland Skyline,he said he would trade if it was 55-02! Managed to get this 55-02,he said he would consider the trade. I coordinated the trade, and he went ghost on me,so to complete what I had already confirmed other two individuals involved I followed through, even though trying to trade for a four string Stingray. I have a 2012 Lakland Skyling 44-02,but I don't play a five string bass. 55-02 is a very nice clean Lakland,it has the Lakland USA stamped pickups,LH3 preamp, and is all original,no dings or scratches. Haven't put it in classifieds yet,was wishing the guy with Stingray would respond, hope he is okay, never know anymore what can happen!

Has anyone swapped out the Bartolini MK-1 preamp for an Audere? Even better if you’ve done so with Lakland Jazz pickups. What we’re the most noticeable changes in tone?

Wondering if making this swap would bring my 55-AJ closer to a 55-60. Rolling off the treble control on the MK-1 pulls out a lot of mids and the mid control doesn’t compensate well. I suppose another option would be to just go V-V-T-T.

Have swapped an Mk-1 for an Aquilar OBP-3, but not the Audere in a 55-01 and also had a DJ-5 with a J-retro. I know it is not specifically what you are asking, but here is my opinion. The Mk-1 is just my favorite at all and the OBP-3 with the MK-1 pups sounded 100% better. My DJ-5 with he J-retro (which I regret selling) made the Lakland pups come to life a bit more, but not overly processed. When I get another DJ I will definitely be installing another J-retro.

I have a custom set of Nordstrand NJ5F Single Coils on their way. Along with the 2B+ preamp for my 55-AJ.

Although I like the Lakland single coil JJ pups, I’m not a fan of the LH3. The Nordstrand’s will be a big improvement!

Will be interested to hear what you think. I originally bought the AJ thinking it’s a good platform to mod, and thinking Nordstrand pre and humcanceling pickups. Part of the reason I’m thinking is selling it is to save myself from jumping in that rabbit hole.

In my 44-01, took out MK-1’s and put in Nordstrand Big Singles, as well as a custom Audere 4 band pre with 6 position Z mode rotary switch. Night and day diff. Audere pre very neutral and clear letting Big Singles really talk with their every present voice. Mids a very controllable. The Z mode selector of the Audere is the secret sauce!

Recording session with my '03 44-02 Skyline tomorrow on a very cool soul-styled original song. I've been playing the snot out of it since slinging up the fresh Super Slinkies, but they're still lively and I'll be going in 100% flat + mid pup selector via RNDI & nothing else for pro clarity.

However long I've had this bass, I don't think I'm out of the honeymoon phase yet. Might be a new record! No pun intended
